RuralStar, bring equal digital lives to rural residents

Description

Back in year 2016, 4 million people in rural areas had little or no access to telecommunication services in Ghana. Start from 2017, Huawei started to innovate a rural telephony project instrumental in bridging the digital divide in Ghana. 400 rural sites with the low cost innovative solution which name is RuralStar have been deployed, RuralStar can help operators reduce the TCO by 50%+ and shorten the ROI from 10 to 3~5 years. Now, Ghana MTN is providing voice and data services for over 1,200,000 people, the digital life bring huge lives change to local village residents. Now, villagers can make calls easily and an abundant digital service such as mobile money, E-Commerce platform, E-education APP can be used in the rural village, which had a major impact on village security, education, medical care etc.,recent business growth can also be attributed to the availability of network coverage through the deployment of RuralStar.
Except Ghana, Huawei RuralStar Solution has also been deployed in some parts of rural areas in more than 50+ countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, Namibia, Algeria, Thailand, Mexico, Peru etc., with the aim of deploying more sites and ushering in a fully connected world.

Replicability

RuralStar could be widely used in all kinds of scenarios including remote mountainous areas, islands, highways, urban villages, emergency communications, etc. Nowadays, Except Ghana, Huawei RuralStar Solution has also been deployed in some parts of rural areas in more than 50+ countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, Namibia, Algeria, Thailand, Mexico, Peru etc., with the aim of deploying more sites and ushering in a fully connected world.
Huawei's RuralStar solution can effectively help operators significantly reduce TCO through wireless backhaul, green energy, and easy installation, effectively reducing ROI and achieving low-cost rural coverage.

Sustainability

RuralStar self-contained cell-site solution support 2G/3G/4G MBB service, it expands cellular coverage to areas where it was previously uneconomical to build traditional coverage solutions by providing:
• An easily deployed wireless backhaul solution based on LTE self-backhaul rather than satellite or Microwave.
• Ability to utilize existing infrastructure such as electric pole or other utility pole
• A full coverage, energy-efficient solar option for where no existing infrastructure, including power, exists today. This can be delivered via helicopter or small truck.
With RuralStar, the site ROI is reduced from 2/3rds to half, down to 3~5years. MTN Ghana reduced their TCO by 70% and will achieve a ROI in less than three years. RuralStar supports the rapid and extensive expansion of mobile networks to cover even the smallest population centers.
The RuralStar technology consumes less power than standard cell site solutions, with lower power draw of the base band- and radio units compared to standard macro-sites found in the industry. This is made possible by a new type of power amplifier design and the breadth voltage only requires a power consumption of around 200~300W. It can thereby rely on solar panels instead of costly diesel generators in off-grid areas, which both eliminates fuel costs and reduces CO2 emissions.

WSIS values promotion

Nowadays, Huawei have deployed more than 400 RuralStar sites in Ghana, providing voice and data services for over 1,200,000 people, the digital life bring huge lives change to local village residents. • Connection improved drastically as residents can now send and receive texts and make calls using cellphones, they also can enjoy an abundant digital service such as mobile money, E-Commerce platform, E-education APP (SDG 9, 10) • The ease in communication has had a ripple effect on security levels in the village. And the SDG 16 calls for this kind of action. • The education sector has greatly benefited from the RuralStar. It has led to more exposure of academic content for both the teachers and students(SDG4). • The residents can now access better health services thanks to the deployment of the RuralStar. (SDG3). • Recent business growth can also be attributed to the availability of network coverage, it has led to the rise in employment rates and has further created a sense of independence for the residents(SDG8). The project helps build resilient infrastructure and provides benefits and sustainable solutions to bridge the digital divide as well as implement WSIS Action Lines and promote the realization of SDGs.
