QSpark - The Spark of Intelligent E-Learning


AI-Powered Adaptive Learning and Academic Analytics Platform for Transforming Higher Education

Description

QSpark is an AI-powered adaptive learning and academic analytics platform developed by the Deanship of E-Learning and Information Technology at Qassim University, Saudi Arabia. The platform leverages artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and gamification to transform higher education from a one-size-fits-all model into a personalized, data-driven learning experience. In its first deployment phase, QSpark served students and faculty members across different specializations. Securely integrated with the SIS and the LMS(Blackboard), the platform provides students with a unified dashboard that brings together academic insights, personalized learning support, and performance analytics in one place. It uses AI algorithms to dynamically adjust assessment difficulty in real-time, predict at-risk students before failure occurs, and generate personalized remedial learning plans with targeted resources. Measurable results include a 6.5% increase in overall student grades, a 42% reduction in failure rates, and a 9.3 percentage-point increase in academic excellence (A/A+). The AI engine automatically generated 5,724 adaptive questions, saving over 380 academic work hours per semester. The platform achieved 95.9% service availability while processing 1.2 TB of academic data. QSpark aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 and complies fully with SDAIA ethical AI principles, establishing a replicable model for smart universities across the region.

Replicability

QSpark is highly replicable due to its modular, cloud-ready architecture and API-based integration design. The platform connects to the existing university systems (Students Information System “SIS” and Learning Management System “Blackboard”) through standard interfaces, allowing any institution to adopt it without replacing current infrastructure. Key replicability features include: (1) Language-agnostic AI engine that adapts to any curriculum content via OpenAI API integration; (2) Configurable adaptive assessment algorithms that work across disciplines — tested in Computer Science, Engineering, and Business; (3) Modular dashboard system deployable at student, faculty, and institutional levels; (4) Data governance framework aligned with national standards (Saudi National Data Management “NDMO”/ Saudi Data and AI Authority “SDAIA”), making it transferable to institutions in any regulatory environment. The platform has already demonstrated cross-disciplinary success across 3 colleges and 17 specializations at Qassim University. Expansion plans include deploying to all remaining colleges and sharing the model with other Saudi universities through the Digital Government Authority (DGA) national platform for depositing free and open source government software. The open API architecture makes it adaptable for universities in the broader MENA region and developing countries seeking affordable AI-enhanced education solutions.


Sustainability

QSpark is sustainable through four reinforcing mechanisms:
1- Financial Sustainability: QSpark was developed in-house with minimal external cost. While Phase 1 used the OpenAI API for content generation and adaptive question creation, the university is migrating to QUAI Agent, a locally developed AI engine, to remove recurring API dependency and achieve full operational autonomy. The platform also generates measurable cost avoidance by reducing student failure. When a student fails, the university incurs additional stipend costs (5,040–5,940 SAR per semester, depending on college type), housing fees (833 SAR per semester), and lost eligibility for research, excellence, and publication incentives valued at 4,000–12,000 SAR. Using a conservative estimate of 5,000 SAR per failure case and applying the methodology to only one specialization for one semester, verified cost avoidance in Phase 1 remained under 1 million SAR. With 1,187 failure cases prevented university-wide, projected annual savings at full scale are expected to reach 10 million SAR, making QSpark financially self-sustaining.
2- Technical Sustainability: The platform runs on scalable infrastructure, including dedicated AI servers and MySQL 8, with automated monitoring and continuous post-deployment checks for data drift and model accuracy. Migration to QUAI Agent will further strengthen data sovereignty, reduce latency, and improve long-term cost predictability.
3- Institutional Sustainability: QSpark is governed through a multi-stakeholder framework involving five university entities, ensuring shared ownership and no single point of governance failure.
4- Knowledge sustainability: The university invests continuously in AI capacity building through SDAIA-supported programs, and over 300 faculty members were trained in Phase 1 to use QSpark’s AI tools and analytics dashboards, creating internal champions who support adoption and knowledge transfer across departments.


WSIS values promotion

QSpark promotes WSIS values by democratizing access to personalized, AI-enhanced education within a public university serving over 55,000 students. The platform embodies the WSIS vision of a people-centered, inclusive information society through several mechanisms: Inclusivity: The adaptive assessment engine adjusts to each student’s individual ability level, ensuring that struggling students receive appropriately challenging content rather than being left behind by a uniform curriculum. This directly addresses educational inequality within the classroom. Empowerment through Data: Students access personal analytics dashboards showing their strengths, weaknesses, and customized improvement roadmaps — including professional certification recommendations aligned with job market needs. This transforms passive learners into self-directed agents of their academic journey. Transparency and Trust: The platform implements Explainable AI (XAI) principles — faculty can see exactly why a student is flagged as at-risk, and students understand the basis of their personalized recommendations. Human-in-the-loop governance ensures AI augments rather than replaces human academic judgment. Ethical AI: Full compliance with SDAIA’s national AI ethics principles (fairness, reliability, transparency, privacy) ensures technology serves societal values, not the reverse.
