Mada Buy Now, Pay Later – Expanding Financial Inclusion through Digital Innovation

Description

Mada is advancing financial inclusion in Jordan by providing a Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) platform that leverages digital technologies to empower underserved populations. The project’s objective is to bridge the gap between access to finance and digital adoption, offering consumers flexible, interest-free credit while enabling merchants to expand their customer base. By integrating digital ID verification, secure payments, and automated merchant onboarding, Mada ensures a seamless, trustworthy experience for all users.

Since its implementation, Mada has partnered with over 200 merchants, enabling thousands of consumers to access essential goods and services, while promoting responsible digital financial behavior. The platform directly contributes to WSIS Action Lines, including C7 (ICT Applications – e‑Government, e‑Business, e‑Health, e‑Education), C2 (ICT Capacity Building), and C5 (Enabling Environment), and supports SDGs 1, 8, 9, and 10 by fostering economic growth, innovation, and reduced inequalities.

Mada demonstrates how ICT-enabled financial services can empower communities, drive sustainable development, and promote inclusive economic participation, illustrating the transformative potential of digital innovation in creating a more equitable and connected society.

Replicability

Mada’s BNPL platform can be replicated in emerging markets across the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia, where access to credit is limited and digital payments are growing. Its cloud-based, scalable technology—covering digital ID verification, secure payments, and merchant onboarding—can be adapted to local regulations and languages. By providing a flexible, responsible credit solution, the model offers a blueprint for expanding financial inclusion, supporting e-commerce growth, and empowering underserved consumers in markets where BNPL is still emerging.

Sustainability

Mada’s BNPL platform is financially and operationally sustainable. Revenue comes from merchant fees, allowing free access for consumers, while automated processes—digital onboarding, ID verification, and reconciliation—keep operational costs low. The platform promotes responsible credit use, reducing defaults and ensuring long-term viability. By fostering financial inclusion and e-commerce growth, Mada creates ongoing value for consumers, merchants, and the wider economy, ensuring the project’s impact can be sustained and scaled over time.

WSIS values promotion

Mada promotes WSIS values by bridging the digital and financial divide in Jordan. The platform empowers underserved consumers with accessible, responsible digital credit, enabling economic participation and social inclusion. It supports digital literacy and innovation through seamless e-commerce and secure online transactions, fostering transparency, trust, and equitable access to technology. By connecting communities, merchants, and consumers through ICT, Mada exemplifies WSIS principles of empowerment, inclusivity, and sustainable development.
