KOLD - Telepresence Suit for metaverse interconnection

Telepresence Suit

Description

A telepresence suit — a biomechanical device as a user terminal for metaverse platform interconnection. The Suit provides feedback from the digital avatar, which interacts with virtual objects of a metaverse, allowing users to feel weight and force. It can also be used as a terminal for remote robotics control (industry). The metaverse serves as a prototype for the future advancement of remote telemedicine services.
The Suit enables access to high-quality education (skills) and telemedicine services for people from different communities, based on digital twins/avatars and metaverse methodologies. At its current stage, the project supports remote rehabilitation techniques, engaging patients in interactions with virtual objects according to digital methods developed by medical doctors.
The project focuses on maintaining and improving people's health during rehabilitation (SDG 3). The Suit also promotes inclusive, fair, and high-quality education through access to digital skills (SDG 4). Additionally, the Suit facilitate remote control of robotic systems in industrial settings, contributing to sustainable infrastructure, inclusive industrialization, and innovative development (SDG 9).
The Suit and platform align with WSIS values, such as C2, C3, C7-LEA, and C7-HEA, by promoting access to telemedicine, user skills, and feedback-based interaction through a digital twin avatar within the metaverse.

Replicability

The detailed development of solutions within the Project will enable the transition to small-scale production of telepresence suits. The platform allows for the scalability of digital skills formed through the telepresence suit and digital twin technology in the user's avatar. This scalability is made possible by the microservices architecture and the use of open technologies at its core. The project's development runs parallel to the standardization processes of the metaverse, ensuring compatibility between avatars and telepresence suits. This initiative contributes to the standardization of this field while also considering existing solutions and draft standards from ITU Study Groups 21 and 11, as well as technical reports and specifications from the ITU Focus Group on the Metaverse, which concluded its work in 2024. Given its alignment with open international standards, the project has the potential for replication and scalability in a free-market environment, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility, even for remote and rural areas.

Sustainability

The sustainability of the Telepresence Suit project as a user interface for the metaverse is defined by the growing demand for new immersive interaction methods between users and virtual worlds (metaverse), as well as remote medicine applications, including post-surgical rehabilitation based on metaverse technologies and telepresence suits. This sustainability is further reinforced by Resolution No. 105 WTSA (New Delhi, October 2024), which encourages the standardization of metaverse-related issues. At present, Study Groups 21 and 11 have several draft recommendations in the metaverse field, including compatibility frameworks for telepresence suits.

WSIS values promotion

This project provides the following benefits: 1. Accessibility and Inclusion: Telepresence suits enable people with disabilities, residents of remote areas, and individuals from various social groups to interact in a virtual environment, gaining access to essential resources such as education, employment, and medical services. This is particularly important for those facing mobility challenges. 2. Education and Skill Development: With telepresence suits, individuals can receive training and acquire practical skills even in professions that traditionally require physical presence, such as surgery and post-operative rehabilitation. For patients and students with limited mobility, this means the ability to continue their education without missing lessons and to stay actively engaged in the learning process. 3. Rehabilitation Programs: Using telepresence suits for rehabilitation improves the quality of medical care, reduces the workload on healthcare personnel, and enhances patient comfort by allowing successful rehabilitation at home. This positively impacts quality of life and the overall level of healthcare services. 4. Economic Benefits: By enabling remote education and employment, local communities can develop professional skills and improve economic opportunities, leading to overall regional prosperity and growth. 5. Standards and Interoperability: The recommendation "ITU-T Q.FITSM Framework of Interoperable Telepresence Suits for Metaverse" was developed based on the results of project research and proposed at the ITU SG11 meeting, approved in February 2025. It enables users to interact within the metaverse while ensuring the realism of this interaction and addressing compatibility issues. Thus, this project actively promotes WSIS values by fostering the development of information technologies, inclusion, equal opportunities, and an improved quality of life on a global scale.
