Geographical Indications Environment & Sustainability (GIES)


A new S&T for remote and rural people to reach SDGs

Description

For meeting challenges from remote and rural people, the IGSNRR launched a decadal project on GIES (Geographical Indications Environment & Sustainability) in 2021` and will be lasted to 2030. The objectives of the project are: (1) based on the open science principle to develop a GIES tool using big data and internet of things for retreat the origin of the geographical products and their environment; (2) through GIES technology free transformation and capacity building and GIES cases in different agriculture ecosystem zones, more than a millions local people will be benefited in four betters (products, nutrition, environment and life) leaving no one behind;(3) creating a machinist to enhance decision makers, scientists, private sectors and all stakeholders to cooperate together focused on accelerating steps to reach SDGs. the results by end of 2024 are:(1)The GIES tools including big data development, internet of things, GIES case development procedures, geographical product retrieval and QR methods were developed and being used successful in 22 GIES cases, more than a million local famers and remote region people benefited;(2) FAO OCOP officers and responsible persons and CODATA experts from 28 countries in Asia and Pacific, Africa and Latin American regions join the capacity building, which help the international trade and high quality domestic and international markets; (3) enhancing the remote and rural cooperation with big cities in a win-win which is called as Hands in Hands initiative (HIHI)(geographical indication products produced in remote and rural region and consumers and mackets in big cities) and digital village progress.

Replicability

IGSNRR signed MOU with FAO on GIES technology free transformation to any partners or members who join the FAO OCOP initiative (by end of 2024, there are 95 countries joined the FAO OCOP initiative). The CODATA, International Committee on Data of International Science Council approved to establish a task group on GIES, one of the objectives is enhancing open access the data for SDGs. CODATA is and will be continue to take actions to use the GIES technology in developing countries.
22 GIES cases in 12 Provinces of China are already successful in using GIES technology and more than 30 cases are on the way, which will be demonstrated for celebrate 80 years anniversary of United National and FAO in October 2025.


Sustainability

The IGSNRR is confirmed the project started in 2021, and will be lasted to 2030, the year of SDGs. FAO Green Agriculture strategy was launched in 2021 and lasted to 2031.

WSIS Prize is high reputation for promoting the project we are going on. It will great help the rural and remote region people to add their bands which was identifies by the open data and open knowledge through International trade.
