Powerful Easy Internet - Big Box plug & play Wi-Fi - Connecting '000s of people in even the toughest of scenarios, .

Description

Jangala’s Big Box Wi-Fi solution provides powerful, easy internet to marginalised and underserved people globally even in the most challenging contexts. Our self-designed and self-developed easy-to-use Big Box technology system combines powerful performance with simplicity, offering a scalable solution to tackling worldwide digital divides. It is capable of connecting a few hundred users to up to 3,000 simultaneous users utilising 32 different sources of backhaul and even with limited power sources.

Jangala’s priority is to meet the growing demand for internet connectivity globally with a ‘laser-focus’ on achieving the SDGs. We work in collaboration with a wide range of partners to empower local communities – from individual schools, healthcare clinics and small NGOs to major organisations like UNICEF and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Big Box has already strengthened the means of implementation of over 70% of the SDGs globally by providing Wi-Fi to unconnected schools, clinics, static and mobile computer labs, refugee camps and disaster response projects connecting over 70,000 people across 36 countries.

Big Box can be used in any context where Wi-Fi is challenging or non-existent including both emergency and protracted crises. For example, it was recently deployed by Serve On’s search and rescue team at the UN Reception/ Departure Centre at Adana airport in Türkiye to help incoming disaster relief teams with their coordinating efforts.

We are applying for the SDG Digital GameChangers Award 2023 as this year marks the very significant move from prototype to manufacture-ready Big Box Version 1 enabling mass production of Big Box. Our ambition is to help connect and empower millions of people with this technology in every country in the world. Winning this award would spread awareness of Big Box - a genuine game changer for the humanitarian sector, for INGOs, for education, healthcare and humanitarian disaster relief worldwide."

Replicability

We have a three point plan to scale Big Box over the next 12-24 months:
1) To have a manufacture-ready Version 1 Big Box, now that we have ample proof of concept from successful prototyping. V1 Big Box by the end of 2023 is being made possible with a recent grant from Arm’s Social Impact Fund.
2) Mass manufacture and start distribution at scale of Big Box Version 1. This includes the development of our trading subsidiary, with the support of Clifford Chance globally, to generate commercial revenue to invest in our pro bono activity.
3) Understand the project management/ wraparound service requirements for country scaling.

This fits with the key enablers for our Theory of Change. Our theory of change is that with investment for transformational growth, scaling our operations and growing our project outreach we can collectively - with our partners - bring the internet to the 2.9billion people worldwide who have never used it and to the 2.8million schools globally who are not connected.

Key enablers for this - and our priorities this year - are:
- To generate income for our Business Plan from new and existing donors/ funders/ supporters
- Investing in manufacturing, distribution and organisational capacity building
- Growing strategic partnerships with other organisations to accelerate maximum reach including INGOs

We have already replicated our system in 36 countries. We are now working on developing the systems to enable us to do this at scale.

In terms of the Big Box technology system, scalability in any field scenario is built into Big Box’s design. The system can be used on any continent thanks to its two global modems and each one can connect hundreds of users. When used as the centre of a larger network around 3000 users can be connected simultaneously.

WSIS values promotion

To install our Big Box equipment in projects, we undertake the following people-centred processes: - Identify the Project Key Stakeholders for the project (ie gateway ground station). Fully remote support to key personnel. They don’t need any technical background or skills as our networks are designed to be installed and expanded by anyone. - Carry out a Remote Site Assessment for the project to understand the equipment required by the school(s) to be risk-informed and evidence-driven. This includes preparing a detailed plan for equipment configuration. - System Despatch to location. - Confirmation of receipt/ Issues flagged with delivery (e.g. with Customs) - Confirmation of set-up attempted/ not attempted; follow-up on potential issues - Systems Deployed (Optimal/ Sub-optimal/ Not functional); follow-up on potential issues - Measurement Evaluation Learning – Project review & remote monitoring Target Beneficiaries Marginalised and underserved people in communities worldwide, including 339m people in more than 68 countries in need of humanitarian assistance (UN data), 2 million schools not connected and the people in organisations who support them. 1) NGOs, INGOs and government partners who struggle to deliver key services such as education and healthcare in low income communities. A lack of easily deployable, capable internet access is one of the biggest barriers to being able to deliver services, let alone effectively and efficiently. 2) People in marginalised and underserved communities (including refugees and internally displaced people) who can benefit from the internet, for example, to increase livelihood opportunities by strengthening their capabilities and increasing opportunities available to them. Healthcare clinics for improved healthcare; human rights organisations. “With each new development in technology, more people are left behind. This also makes existing inequities around race, gender, age, ability and income worse.”
