Connected North

Fostering student engagement and enhanced education outcomes in remote Indigenous communities.

Description

Connected North provides live, interactive virtual learning experiences and access to educational resources for students and teachers in remote communities, supporting them where they live. Through the program, Indigenous students from Kindergarten - Grade 12 are offered unique opportunities to thrive. Connected North currently serves more than 25,000 students in more than 140 schools in remote Indigenous communities. 96.5% of teachers feel that Connected North sessions help to engage their students, contributing to their attendance in class and motivation for learning.

Replicability

Connected North helps educators and schools access live, interactive learning experiences. Through the development of our program, we have built the capacity of dozens of educational institutions and individual Indigenous experts to be able to deliver virtual learning experiences. These institutions and experts now have the skills and technology capacity to deliver this type of learning to students and schools far beyond our own network of schools.

Sustainability

While the program began with funding from corporate partners and individual donors, after almost 10 years of program delivery, the majority of our school partners are now being funded for program delivery directly by community and government partners. When we onboard a new school, we aim to secure co-investment from the beginning of their participation to ensure shared ownership and sustainability of their participation.

WSIS values promotion

Connected North works towards promoting the value of equality of access to a high quality, culturally relevant learning experience. Due to the history of intergenerational trauma, lack of resources to communities, and other complex factors, 44% of Indigenous students do not complete high school, compared to 12% of non-Indigenous students in Canada. We also work to amplify the value of shared responsibility, engaging more than 30 corporate, government, and philanthropic partners who provide resources to make the program possible, and more than 300 content providers who deliver interactive digital learning.
