Large-Scale distributed global Domain Name System service platform (SLS DNS Platform)

Description

DNS is a vital infrastructure for ICT. .CN is an important part of the global DNS ecosystem. Since 2005, CNNIC begins to build SLS DNS Platform, with the goals:
1. Strives to be the leading platform, contributes to the development of information and communication infrastructure globally.
2. Focus on Internet balanced development issues, enhance the service quality of .CN in less developed areas worldwide.
3. Improves application ecological environment, provides a healthy information sharing platform for global users.
The project is relevance to information and communication infrastructure, as the platform is a bridge that connects China to the international DNS ecosystem.
The project achieves great results, as the platform carries the largest ccTLD, helping less developed areas on Internet to improve the online application environment.
The platform fits to Sustainable Development Goals. For sustainability, firstly, as DNS is an irreplaceable part of the Internet, the platform cannot exit the stage of history. Secondly, CNNIC will play a more important role on supporting the continued stable operation of the project. For reproducibility, as the technology of the platform is standard and flexible, it can be replicated in all countries, by personalized the platform according to corresponding stage of Internet development.

Replicability

Domain name is a universal technology, people often say that "the network has no borders", which makes the domain name free from geographical restrictions. Like the logo of an enterprise, a domain name is a symbol of the website promotion. A good domain name can help customers better understand and remember the name and service of the website. After years of development, the Super Large-Scale distributed global Domain Name System service platform (SLS DNS Platform) has gradually developed into a global DNS service platform, with dozens of service sites radiating to major Internet regions around the world, carrying the world's largest country code top-level domain (ccTLD) service, and undertaking about 10 billion times of DNS responses daily.
The replicability of this platform is mainly reflected in the following aspects. Firstly, the technology used in SLS DNS Platform is applicable to all countries. The distributed architecture of 2 locations and 3 centers, with global DNS service sites, which covers all five regions of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), can be well replicated in all countries around the world. Secondly, the scale of SLS DNS Platform can be flexible controlled according to the number of users, and can be rapidly expanded through cooperation, while the cost of the service sites can be controlled through lightweight node technology, making the project common among countries with different degrees of economic development and different populations. Thirdly, the existing technology of the platform has the characteristics of standardization, generalization and plasticization. Different countries can continuously optimize the service sites layout, technical architecture and service level according to the current situation of their Internet development, making the platform more personalized. The personalized SLS DNS Platform can help the people around the world to spread their thinking, innovate technology, and keeping pace with international Internet community development

Sustainability

The sustainability of the project is mainly reflected in the following aspects.

Firstly, .CN ccTLD services, which are mainly carried by SLS DNS Platform, is an indispensable part of the global Internet system. .CN, as China's identity on the Internet, is an extremely important part of the global DNS ecosystem, as while as a key information infrastructure connecting China and global Internet. From the perspective of the current and future development of the Internet for a long period of time, the DNS is still an irreplaceable part of the Internet, therefore, as .CN naturally has sustainability, SLS DNS Platform is sustainable as well.

Secondly, .CN has bright future. After 25 years development, and be repeatedly inspected by the global Internet users, SLS DNS Platform already has the global first-class comprehensive service capability. In the long run, .CN still have great development prospects in the international domain name market.

Thirdly, the project operation cost control is sustainable. By applying lightweight DNS service site technology in recent years, the investment has been effectively controlled while increasing the number of services sites, which helps the sustainable operation of the project in the long run.

Fourthly, the project has a first-class technical team in DNS field. As the registry of .CN, CNNIC has cultivated a large number of excellent domain name practitioners over the years, made number of excellent partners. As the builder of the global information and communication infrastructure, CNNIC will certainly play a more important role in the future and support the continued safe and stable operation of the project.

WSIS values promotion

With more and more people around the world interacting with ICT, generating information and accessing it, the increasingly significant impact of the Internet on people's daily lives cannot be underestimated. The DNS is an important infrastructure of the Internet, and the .CN ccTLD service is one of the key links concerning the overall service quality of global DNS. Through the construction of the SLS DNS Platform, the quality of Internet access for global Internet users is effectively improved: Firstly, the Internet experience of global users is enhanced. For example, the speed of global users' access to the Internet is accelerated. Meanwhile, the public, especially the underdeveloped Internet countries or regions, has been effectively improved, as well as the establishment of a high-speed network environment with abundant resources is promoted. Secondly, the project benefits a wide range of groups, including young people, the elderly, people with disabilities, and people in remote areas, all of whom can gain equal access to the Internet. By accessing the SLS DNS Platform, users worldwide can use ICT to improve their quality of life, acquire new knowledge and learn new skills. Thirdly, the Internet environment has been significantly improved. By carrying out special governance of domain name registration information, real name audit of .CN registration information has been well completed, which significantly reduce the probability of fraud, to combat crime, to protect the health and harmony of the Internet environment. Fourthly, based on the deployment of SLS DNS Platform, .CN-based applications provide the public with fair and equal opportunities in many aspects, carries out plenty of technical trainings for the society, enhances technical communication on a global scale, promotes global cultural exchange and interconnection, as well as creates more economic values and job opportunities.
