Moving Floor Concept

Description

Moving Floor Gotland AB (MF) is a Swedish technology company with a mission to fundamentally improve global animal protein production by increasing yield and reducing emissions and antibiotic use. MF aims to disrupt the animal husbandry industry by bringing a completely automatic and digital cleaning solution for farm buildings allowing for a more sustainable and circular system. MF has developed a patented technology, the Moving Floor Concept, to give farm animals “a toilet” substantially improving the living conditions for the animals and, for pigs, resulting in estimated 19% less carbon footprint. The non-automatic pig farms of today produce 75% of all ammonia emissions in the EU (FAO, transforming food and agriculture to achieve the SDGs, 2018) and the lacking barn hygiene makes pigs sensitive to diseases, which is prevented by an excessive use of antibiotics, 70% of all antibiotics globally are used for animals. The over-use of antibiotics fuels the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which is predicted by the World Bank to take 10 million human lives per year from 2030, bringing some perspective on COVID-19; so far killing > 1 million (World Bank 2017, Drug resistant infections).

Tech: Robotics (agrobots, driverless tractors)

Replicability

Pig farms are in many parts of the world using huge amounts of water to daily flush the living area of the pigs clean. The usage varies, but up to 170 liters per pig per day can be used (FAO, Livestock’s Long Shadow, 2006). Our green technology, protected by strong patents, is an affordable high-tech solution in a low-tech industry that contributes to solving the above mentioned problems. The product is a 6x2 m hardware and software unit easily integrated in new or existing buildings. It offers a multi-factor solution to the customer pain points like profitability, biosecurity, water usage and compliance with legislations on emissions, animal welfare, eutrophication and antibiotics. The Moving Floor Concept has direct contribution to the UN SDGs: 1. The aim is to avoid all preventive use of antibiotics 2. The emittance of greenhouse gases are estimated to be reduced by up to 19% per kg meat produced 3. No water is used in the Moving Floor system, allowing for huge water savings in many parts of the world

WSIS values promotion

Category 3 – Agriculture innovations systems and sustainable farming 21. E-agriculture Ensure the systematic dissemination of information using ICTs on agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, forestry and food, in order to provide ready access to comprehensive, up-to-date and detailed knowledge and information, particularly in rural areas. Public-private partnerships should seek to maximize the use of ICTs as an instrument to improve production (quantity and quality).
