WSIS Prizes Contest 2020 Nominee

Social media Point of Contact – Facebook and Government.

Social media PoC

Description

The Ministry of Digital Affair’s dedicated PoC helps Facebook users re-appeal for their removed content or accounts to be restored. The IT tool has been available on the Polish government website GOV.PL since mid-December 2018.
Up to the date of this submission there have been over one thousand entries to the system, with almost 35% of appeals leading to Facebook content restoration.
This is the first tool of this kind ever developed by any government entity together with an on-line platform as big as Facebook. The service is free of charge.

Replicability

Facebook is an international social media platform that is well-established and used in most of the world. If Facebook agrees, the project can be replicated in any country Facebook has users in. If well coordinated, the project can provide tangible benefits for social media users wherever they are based.

Sustainability

Content management over the Internet is a fundamental topic in today's digital domain. It is also a multilayer and complex issue that demands reflection and cooperation between all the parties active on the internet, such as service providers, public administration, citizens, etc.
The project is complemental to Poland's e-service policy. It is open for further development, as we aim to make everyone’s life easier and smarter with digital means. We consider social media an inherent part of everyday life of citizens and so we intend to provide people with services that make social media usage more democratic and transparent.

WSIS values promotion

Free expression is key to a thriving society and giving everyone a voice is a positive force in the world, which increases the diversity of ideas shared in public discourse. However, service providers also need to ensure the safety of their users. Striking the right balance between these values continues to be a difficult and constantly evolving challenge. Therefore we have established and developed this public-private partnership project in order to support a transparent environment for usage of one of most popular social media among citizens.
