WSIS Prizes Contest 2020 Champion

Balloting and Electoral Services

Description

Through innovative and trust-based partnerships throughout the African continent and beyond, EISA engages in mutually beneficial capacity reinforcement activities aimed at enhancing all partners` interventions in the areas of elections, democracy and governance. EISA partners with electoral management bodies, political parties, civil society organisations, local government structures, parliaments, Pan-African organisations, Regional Economic Communities and donors. EISA is also part of major global networks working on election assistance and support. EISA has worked with civil society organisations in a dozen African countries, thus enabling them to assess electoral processes in a credible and professional manner and/or contribute to electoral reform efforts. Our services have continued to be sought after by national, sub-regional and continental partners well beyond the Institute's human capacity.

The Balloting and Electoral Services (BES) of EISA has conducted a demonstration of its newly developed electronic balloting for on sight non statutory elections presenting the electronic ballot paper to the SATAWU Eastern Cape provincial congress held in East London on the 17 and 18 May, 2014. We believe modern technology can be used to ensure the voting process is resilient. At the same time, this is not an intention to replace paper ballots but rather to supplement and improve systems that rely on them, and it is not designed to support internet voting. In short, it is a new tool for use by the existing election community and government entities that run elections.

BES provides a sustainable platform for understanding, organizing and implementing election processes.

WSIS values promotion

The Balloting and Electoral Services Unit (BES) objective is to promote a culture of democracy and build the confidence of organisations and their beneficiaries in democratic electoral practices, as an essential component of good governance, within themselves and society in general. Over the years, BES has developed various technologies that are adaptable to specific procedural requirements according to the type of election.
