The Translation Challenge was launched in September 2017 by the Mohammed bin Rashid Global Initiatives with aims to improve Arabic educational content, and to bridge the gap between educational curricula in Arab and developed countries, in order to provide Arab learners with an equal quality of education. In addition, the challenge was aiming to encourage all Arabs to co-create and participate in Arabic content creation and translation.
The Translation Challenge called on all Arabs to help translate to Arabic in one year 5,000 videos and 11 million words of world-class math and science material to be available online free to over 50 million Arab students from kindergarten to grade 12. The content were sourced from the world-class library of materials developed by the Khan Academy which was localised in accordance with the highest international standards and curricula. The initiative is part of a larger Arabisation plan that is addressing the quality of educational material available to students in Arabic.

the project demonstrate a working model for an innovative and replicable solution to cover the gap of Arabic digital content by crowd sourcing Arabic digital content creation and translation. The project-operating model managed to prove its viability and that can be utilised to develop new Arabic digital content for education or different context. The project team ensured to document all processes, workflow, lessons learned thought the project stages to ensure building a working model that can be replicated over the coming phases either by MBRGI or by any other interested party.

The Translation Challenge project supports United Nation Sustainable development Gaols (SDG) and the World Summit on the Information Sociality (WSIS) action lines. The project directly support action line C8: Cultural Diversity and Identity, linguistic diversity and local content by addressing the large gap in Arabic language digital content. WSIS action line C8 considers providing content that is relevant to the cultures and languages of individuals in the Information Society as crucial need. Arabic language is the language spoken by over 422 million people and is considered one the six official languages by the United Nations, however the Arabic content on the internet is only 3% compared to other languages. The project also support the SDG as WSIS action line C8 maps to SDG target ‘4.7’ and also following SDG ‘2.5’, ‘6.B’, ‘8.3’, ‘8.9’, ‘11.4’, ‘12.B’ based on the WSIS SDG mapping matrix.
