The objective of the project is to developan assistive device called ALICE withnavigational and cognitive abilities.Assistive device ALICE will consist ofsmartphone wirelessly connected to localor in perspective remote processingunit. Apart from the camera, ALICE willutilise sensors for position detection, orientation, movement and distance fromobstacles. The position and distancemapping will be cross-referenced andprocessed in combination with the visualinformation, avoiding ambiguities in thesemantics. ALICE will use artificial intelligenceto plan and anticipate based onfusion of sensory inputs and previousknowledge. The system will verbalize itsperceptions trough intuitive audio systemand synthesised voice to translatevisual to verbal in comprehensive anduser friendly manner. The user will beable to communicate with the systemthrough a voice interface.Principal end users are elderly blind whowill be involved in each iteration of ALICEdevelopment by providing suggestionsand guiding the change of requirementsaccording to their experiences. Other usersof the system are relatives and carerswho will set-up and share routs for navigationleading to the development of arespective community.
