Teachers’ Portal


Description

The interactive teacher’s portal is a smart supplement to Bangladesh’s ailing teachers’ training system that serve 900,000 teacher with its 1500 seats of modern learning facility. Additionally, the costly face-to-face training is often too much for these teachers to bear. The teachers’ portal, a collaborative, co-creative and problem solving CPD platform, has fast became popular among teachers to create/share digital content for all subject areas. As the membership exceeds 3, 42,425 and growing, the portal is already the largest local repository of educational content. Teachers’ Portal uses elements of ‘gamification’ in an attempt to create virtual incentives for the teachers to participate more actively. Every week, 3 teachers are selected as the best content developers based on various criteria including their online rating by fellow users. An off-line annual conference along with 8 divisional conference started recently has also sewed the seed of a vibrant community of learners. Teachers in Teachers Portal who are early adopters and skilled in ICT and pedagogy have recognised as ICT4E Ambassador and who have started to work closely with local government and Deputy Commissioners Office to play their role in community development and quality education. In the first phase, Teachers’ portal has focused on teachers’ empowerment and peer learning and the focus of in the second phase is education leadership and innovation practice with a goal that every Schools will become cultural, innovation and 21st century skilled human resource development hub. The objectives of education leadership programme in Teachers’ Portal are to develop empathy in reshaping the learning environment for 21st century learners, to practice Innovation showcasing, promoting change stories and institutionalizing successful cases and to build network for education leaders and decision makers.

Replicability

This initiative is a comprehensive web-based solution for the teachers to develop their skills. This idea could be replicated in different other sectors where peer-to-peer learning and interaction among innovative professionals could enrich each other in their respective area. It could be replicated in other countries with similar context for developing human resources in different sectors using ICTs as enabler. This initiative is self-evolving and it is generation new ideas from the platform. So, replicating this initiative could bring some changes in Bangladesh and other countries.


Sustainability

1. Directorate of secondary and higher Education (DSHE) will take the ownership of Teachers Portal after the phase -III. Teachers portal enhancement and maintenance will be funded by DSHE from July 2019.
2. EMIS- Education management Information System under DSHE will maintain the initiative with the technical guidance of a2i
3. Teachers Training of DSHE, Prime Ministers commitment to include all 1 million teachers in Teachers Portal, Teachers Portal as the Change stories dissemination platform, ‘Green School, Clean School’ Campaign, Increment and MPO facilities defined by performance in the teacher portal can help teachers portal to reach target beneficiaries


WSIS values promotion

The common desire and commitment reflected in WSIS Declaration of principles is to to build a people-centred, inclusive and development-oriented Information Society, where everyone can create, access, utilize and share information and knowledge, enabling individuals, communities and peoples to achieve their full potential in promoting their sustainable development and improving their quality of life, premised on the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and respecting fully and upholding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Teachers can voice their opinions or provide suggestions regarding educational policy, teaching learning methods or any national issues and receive feedback from Ministry of Education and other respective authorities. This portal will gradually be integrated with National e-Learning Platform being developed by Access to Information (a2i) Programme. This project has critical role in information and knowledge production, education and training, and to support the establishment of partnerships, cooperation and networking between other institutions like National Academy for Education Management, National Museum of Science and Technology and Directorate General of Health Services under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. So, the initiative is aligned with C7. ICT Applications: e-learning and C4. Capacity Building. The Teachers’ Portal also fits with the action line of cultural diversity and identity, linguistic diversity and local content (C8). It provides learners the opportunity to work with people from different cultures, thereby helping to enhance learners’ teaming and communicative skills as well as their global awareness. All contents available here are developed by local teachers, thus local and regional socio economic and cultural context are maintained.
