Smart Traffic Mobile Application

Description

The Smart Traffic will allow citizens to avail themselves of the latest traffic information on major roads. The mobile app will therefore provide useful information on road blocks and heavily congested routes, and also on road deviations.

The Mobile App features a map in order to show the different levels of traffic congestion in Mauritius. The different level of congestions will be shown on the map using different colour codes for each congestion level (e.g. Heavy Traffic, Medium Traffic, Normal traffic etc.).

The different congestion status of major roads on the map is dynamically updated by the Officers at the Traffic Branch as soon as they receive field information from Policemen who are deployed at the major roads across the island and transmit it via the Backend to the General public as soon as they receive latest information.

Replicability

The Smart Traffic app can be deployed in other outer islands of Mauritius or other regional countries to allow the respective Police officers/Traffic authorities to provide traffic news & latest notifications to the Public.

Sustainability

Project is sustainable as there are no major financial costs involved after its implementation except for a yearly software maintenance charge for the Mobile app & its back end. Given the backend is hosted on a cloud environment, there will be little or no additional upgrade costs in the future in case more hardware resources (e.g. memory/bandwidth) are required to handle increasing number of citizens who use the mobile app.

There is also a positive impact on the environment as the mobile app promotes better traffic management which contributes to reducing the Carbon footprint in Mauritius.

WSIS values promotion

Smart Traffic project promotes the emergence of an inclusive Information Society as per WSIS values as it promotes the sharing of valuable and timely information with Citizens. The Smart Traffic app also encourages the usage and deployment of ICTs to create benefits in several aspects of daily life of its users. This project provides citizens with real time traffic information and lastest news from the Traffic branch.
