The EXCITE project has developed mobilerobot telepresence (MRP) devicesfor use in the homes of elderly users toenable social interaction.A key novelty in the project is that userfeedback has been gathered using longitudinaltrials where users have therobot at home for several months. EXCITEhas used the Giraff telepresenceunit developed by Giraff TechnologiesAB. At the beginning of the project, theunit was in an initial prototype stage withlimited functionalities. After three years, user feedback from EXCITE has led tothe development, change of the unit, and synthesis of various releases in amanner which is coherent with user´srequests. The project has won the AAL JP MostPromising Project Award in 2011 andhas been in focus of a plethora of venuesas a technology advocate for independentassisted living. Regardingsocial and economic impact, care organizationsin Sweden have validatedthe cost savings of the Giraff solutionin the appropriate care scenarios, andthe increased “peace of mind” experiencedby elderly residents and familymembers.
