ICT Volunteerism : Empowering Youth towards Digital Inclusion

Malaysia ICT Volunteer with Institute of Higher Education @ Multimedia University

Description

Malaysia ICT Volunteer (MIV) is an initiative by Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to empower Malaysians to be technologically prepared for the digital era. There are four focus groups under the MIV programme namely; MIV with Community, MIV with School, MIV with Institute of Higher Education (IHE), and MIV with International ICT Volunteers (IIV). In 2018, MIV carried out a collaborative programme with Multimedia University (MMU) and branded it as MIV with IHE @ MMU.

MIV with IHE @ MMU 2018 reached 2, 175 audiences through the advocacy activities and ICT projects carried out by the 50 selected MIV student volunteers. The project was held mainly at 10 selected internet centres across three states in Malaysia. The project was a success as more than half of the audiences agreed that they have improved their ICT skills and knowledge. Social Return on Investment (SROI) is used to measure the contribution made by the MIV student volunteers which is based on the number of volunteering hours contributed by them against the number of hours taken to train them. The SROI for the said project is 44.4 which is the highest in comparison to other previous MIV programmes.
