The BIT is a website launched by the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT, as per its Spanish acronym) in May 2017. The platform was developed to disseminate the statistical information that the IFT uses to monitor and regulate the Broadcasting and Telecommunication (B&T) sectors in Mexico. In addition, the platform is an interactive web tool that follows international best practices in terms of open data and transparency. Through the BIT, the IFT is aiming the following goals: • Creating knowledge about the Mexican B&T sectors.• Strengthening the decision making process for the industry stakeholders.• Enhancing the creation of public policies aimed to improve Mexican society welfare, through B&T services that are affordable and are provided with quality. The BIT contains indicators of the telecommunications services in Mexico at a national, state, and municipal level. Additionally, it includes key economic indicators for the B&T sectors, telephone number portability, and international comparisons. This tool contributes with goals 9 and 10 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Since the BIT was developed from a Business Intelligence and Data Bases approach, and following the best practices of data publishing, any telecommunications or broadcasting regulator from any country can replicate the website. Moreover, the BIT can even be replicated for other sectors and not necessarily for the B&T ones. As a reference of the above, the BIT has been acknowledged by the Organization for Economic and Cooperation Development (OECD), in its report Telecommunication and Broadcasting Review of Mexico 2017, where the BIT is considered as an international reference for B&T statistics publication.
The IFT has the enough financial resources to keep the BIT running. Actually, in order not to depend on annual budgets, the BIT annual licenses fees are paid from the IFT trust fund. Furthermore, the platform has been well received by telecommunications operators, who understand that the BIT presents valuable statistics for taking strategic decisions in the sector.
The BIT is fully inclusive because it provides information of the B&T sectors in Mexico to any Internet user, and it is also used to permanently monitor the B&T evolution in order to analyze and design public and regulatory policies aimed to reduce the digital divide, increase the coverage, in order to increase the quality of lives of the population, but also the development of the private sector in a digital economy environment, in order to diminish inequality.
