Project Details

Boosting the pipeline of Women in Technology through role modelling and information dissemination

Description

AFCHIX is a network of women in IT who work on a volunteer basis. One of our main programs provides mentorship to girls and encourages them to consider careers in Computer Science and IT. We achieve this through visits to schools, celebrating annual Girls in ICT Days, running technical workshops for the young women already in the industry and Role Modeling –which is one of our very recent programs and our nominated innovation. Research shows that role modelling is a proven and powerful method for mentorship, teaching and passing on knowledge, skills, and values. Research also shows that role models have noteworthy effects on female students' self-confidence in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Our innovation: “Boosting the pipeline of Women in Technology through role modelling and information dissemination” is aimed at inspiring young girls to consider Information Technology (IT). We are using documented high quality stories and videos featuring successful African women in Information Technology (IT) to inspire young girls. Africa has several women that have succeeded in the Information Technology Industry, but their success stories have not been documented for role modelling to benefit young girls in rural and urban schools.
