Empowering Youth

Description

The project intends to empower 2000 vulnerable young boys and girls from 10 urban slums in Islamabad/Rawalpindi through imparting life-skills training and building their capacity to sensitize wider communities through interactive theaters.
The project is designed to work with 15 young persons referred to as “Core Team” from each of the 10 communities. In each of the 10 core teams the project would induct 10 male youth members and 5 female members would be mobilized to join to encourage participation in gender participation, however, the cultural barriers may be a hindrance. The project team is well aware of such risks and is prepared to deal with such scenarios with cultural sensitivity. The core team would be given life skills sessions and skills to address these issues with the wider community through interactive theaters. The project will culminate with core teams independently managing a small project to sensitize the local communities on life-skills through theater performance from a small grant awarded to them. The purpose of awarding a small grant to core teams is to shift the power to young people and to enable them to practically plan, implement, coordinate and manage small initiatives independently. This will not only enhance practical skills but will also give them self-confidence and will boost their self-esteem. It is a key factor that will ensure the sustainability of the project.

Sustainability

The project aims to develop a layer of empowered individuals in the vulnerable communities that can continue to play their effective role beyond the life of the project. The design of the project encourages praxis from its direct beneficiaries by making them partners in the project which will ensure the conceptual sustainability of the project. Through managing small grants, the core teams will be set on a course that will lead them to independently take small initiatives to change the conditions of their respective areas.
