GirlsCoding - an initiative to train young girls in underserved communities (Slums and the Orphanages) in Nigeria, in computer programming skills, place them on internship and give them mentorship opportunities with female technology and engineering mentors, for the purpose of gender equality and economic independence.Target audience are young girls within the age range of 10-17years, living in underserved communities such as slums, orphanages and public schools in Nigeria. For the year 2016, we are training girls from the slums and orphanages in Lagos Nigeria; girls have been taken through classes on digital literacy (Microsoft excel, powerpoint, word and how computer works) after which they were taught hypertext markup language (html) and Cascading style sheet (css) who will go back to their communities to train other girls, under strict supervision. We know that through the exposure in trainings, internship and mentoring that our girls are currently receiving, they can have a voice and be economically empowered.GirlsCoding is our way of promoting gender equality through ICT/STEM by making vulnerable young girls be developers and decision makers of their life and career inclusive.
