#techmums has one simple mission – to create and connect kick-ass, tech-savvy mums. Launched in 2012, by digital evangelist Dr Sue Black OBE, #techmums is fuelled by the belief that empowering mums leads to improvements for them, their families and their communities. #techmums began by offering free tech courses to mums across the UK, from online safety to python coding and have been credited with opening doors to new careers and further education. But Sue and the #techmums team faced a challenge. Young, disadvantaged mums are one of the hardest groups to reach. Many young mums face isolation, single-handedly bringing up their children, and finding it hard to connect with others, often feeling intimidated by traditional mother and baby groups. Sue and her team wanted to find a way to connect with this group, help them to feel part of a community, and increase their confidence. One of the most used channels by this group is social media, and Facebook has the best combination of content features (live video, groups, etc). So, Sue approached Facebook about a partnership, and the concept for #techmumsTV was born. Conceived as a live magazine-style TV show targeted at mums aged 18-24, #techmumsTV was broadcast live from Facebook’s London HQ. The show was supported with ongoing social media content to create a community who could connect, share ideas, seek advice and ultimately build their confidence to embrace digital opportunities.
