elearning classrooms in city of joburg libraries

Digital skills for the community through public libraries

Description

The 12 eLearning classrooms (or what is traditionally called computer labs in other libraries) are located in 12 libraries from all 8 regions in the City of Johannesburg and were introduced in 2016 to be used only for online courses, and this was an initiative introduced and managed by a private company. In 2017 the City discontinued funding the management of these facilities, therefore City of Joburg libraries had to find ways of ensuring that these facilities continue being utilised.
The eLearning unit redesigned and introduced different programs in these eLearning classrooms in 2018, turning them into spaces where the communities can enjoy various services both offline and online and also to assist libraries without computer facilities through the concept of “mobile elearning classrooms.
While generally the introduction of technology, internet and online learning has made libraries more appealing, the Elearning Classrooms have played a major role in encouraging communities to come back into libraries in a safe environment to access internet and also learn online. Mobile elearning classrooms have made the library environment more vibrant wherever they are brought in, and also encourages resource sharing for the under-resourced libraries

In other public libraries and municipalities where there is a possibility of having laptops, connectivity and staff.
In youth centers and schools
they can approach NGO's or private businesses for collaboration or to share resources and skills

Sustainability

If governments continue funding digital skills programs in municipalities and those funds are allocated to libraries.
IF Private companies/businesses partner with libraries to provide their ICT expert knowledge and content
if broadband network is strengthened in rural areas as well.
if municipalities do not neglect libraries as priorities , but also see them as equally important as economic development departments for their role in providing information and now digital skills to create employment and entrepreneurship opportunities
if education departments continue working with libraries to utilize libraries as support structures in introducing digital skills to learners who would not have these resources in some schools

WSIS values promotion

it addresses Action Lines C3,4, and 7. It allows the Community of Johannesburg to be included in the Digital society. It also allows libraries to play a role in the 4th industrial revolution by introducing technology based information services. It encourages collaboration with businesses and NGOs. We have worked with a UNESCO winner "Fundza Literacy trust" on reading development programs where we invite them to host digital writing workshops for learners. We have worked with various local Coding NGO"s and Microsoft who have helped us introduce coding to the youth and this is part of skills sharing as librarians do not have such expert knowledge of coding and other digital skills. These kind of collaborations benefit the library staff and community when we invite NGO's and big corporations like Google and Microsoft. it also assist in resource sharing for South Africa as a developing country. Our mobile elearning classrooms are taken to rural areas and benefit those communities
