WSIS Prizes Contest 2022 Nominee

Open Science on High Quality Geographical Products (Indications) for Environment and Sustainability

Geographical Science & Technology & Engineering Meeting SDGs

Description

The objectives of the project are:
(1) Linking geographical science, technology and engineering to the local people for SDGs focusing on Goal 2, Goal 15 and Goal 1;
(2) Using big data, internet of thins and AI technologies to tracing the geographical products sources easily and convincible by both online and cell phones;
(3) Providing a reproducible methodology for replicability from local scale to national scale to regional scale during the next decade.
The results achieved of the project are:
(1) established a reproducible methodology and technology from local level to national level;
(2) 11 cases in 8 counties (cities) from North East of China, South of China, East of China and West of China had been successfully evaluated and joining the network;
(3) The GIES network platform was established based on the Global Change Research Data Publishing and Repository, which was WSIS Prize 2018 (e-Science Champion) and value added to the WSIS products.
(4) Big data, internet of things, AI technology and tools on geographical products environment assessment and monitoring were developed.

The impact generated as the following:
(1) More open science cases would like to join the case network, more and more local people realize that open science will benefit their life and even change their lives.
(2) The project benefits local people. For example, The Case 3 shows Lanjia village with 1995 people in 2020, among them, only 2 people under 35 years old. No road reaches the village except the path and no any income for the village community in 2020. After the GIES project in 2021 for opening data and knowledge including clean water, black soil and high quality rice, good prices and more orders for rice come to the village and road comes the village in October 2021.

Replicability

This project will be replicable in Asia countries though the cooperation with FAO Asia office and Belt and Road Initial Program region though the cooperation with ANSO. Both cooperation will be started in Feburary 2022.

Sustainability

High quality development is the national strategy of China during the following decade. There are around ten thousand GI cases in China in the county level. The local government and companies, as well as research institute had been invested and located funding to this work. More and more local government and companies realized that more open science, more marketing, and will more benefit to the village.
The keys to make the project sustainable are:(1) training and to provide technical services; (2) making the cases network platform for tracing the geographical products sources more efficient; and (3) science-technology- engineering should be linked directly to each of the local cases.

WSIS values promotion

Digital data, knowledge, technology and tools including geographical information system and remote sensing analysis, internet of things for tracing the geographical products sources, in situ data transformation and AI technology are necessary for the GIES project. The GIES network platform was established based on the online system of the Global Change Research Data Publishing and Repository (GCdataPR) at: http://www.geodoi.ac.cn. GCdataPR was established in 2014, it has been the Regular member of the World Data System, the International Council of Sciences since 2016. It was awarded the WSIS Prize 2018 (e-Science, Champion). This project is value added for the platform; it will attract more local people to use the information technology in their normal lives.
