Manufacturing 5G with 5G: Innovative Practice of ZTE's Global 5G Intelligent Manufacturing Base


Description

With the advent of Industry 4.0, the demand for flexible and intelligent production has become increasingly strong. At the same time, the breakthrough in reliability and latency of 5G communication technology has made it possible for wireless applications to be applied to the manufacturing field. In the factory of the future, the flexible, mobile, and universal connection provided by wireless communication will surely bring revolutionary development to the production, transportation, and service in the life cycle of the manufacturing industry. With its own advantages in understanding both 5G networks and manufacturing, ZTE Corporation uses ZTE's global 5G intelligent manufacturing base as a practical point to promote itself and industry changes. Adhering to the concept of “manufacturing 5G with 5G”, China Telecom and ZTE have built the Binjiang 5G factory into four functional sectors: 5G smart workshops, digital factory operations, automated three-dimensional sorting centers, and 5G smart parks, driven by 5G equipment manufacturing scenarios. A fully 5G connected digital factory was built, transforming manufacturing from traditional resource configuration to scene-driven configuration, from traditional manual operation to automation and unmanned manner, and from traditional offline management to and intelligent online upgrade. ZTE leads standard project on those practices on smart manufacturing in 3GPP (3GPP TS23.745: Application layer support for Factories of the Future (FF)) and ITU-T (ITU-T F.MVSreqs (Requirements for machine vision-based applications and services in smart manufacturing) and ITU-T H.MVSarch (Architecture for machine vision system in smart manufacturing)) andshares its smart manufacturing solutions based on 5G technology in the industry.

Replicability

Binjiang factory has planned 16 categories and more than 60 industrial scenarios that can be replicated on a large scale.
1)Smart logistics based on 5G cloud-based AGV. There are more than 70 5G AGVs in the factory to automatically realize batch and real-time distribution of materials. With the help of 5G's uRLLC features, AGV can increase the cargo turnover by 20%, reduce the construction cost by 15%, save the turnover of manpower by 100%.
2)Machine vision(MV) based on 5G+MEC. Usually MV requires uplink bandwidth no less than 60Mbps. 5G can well meet this demand. The introduction of 5G MEC allows the computing power of multi-point MV applications in the factory to be flexibly deployed and coordinated through the technology of GPU virtualization, which is impossible with traditional industrial computer MV methods.
3)Flexible manufacturing based on 5G cloud-based PLC. The 5G+MEC cloud-based PLC will meet the factory’s requirements for real-time control, data integration, security and privacy protection in the flexible manufacturing process. Binjiang 5G factory is the first to install a cloud-based PLC on the test production line of the small cell. Compared with the traditional hard PLC, it improves the efficiency of operation and maintenance and reduces the adjustment cycle of flexible production lines by more than 20%.
4)Asset&personnel management based on 5G positioning. Binjiang factory has deployed integrated indoor positioning of 5G+UWB technology. Application scenarios include positioning and tracking of valuable instruments, personnel on/off-duty and warning of electronic fences.
5)Remote assistance based on 5G+ ultra-high-definition(UHD) video. ZTE's 5G+4K UHD remote expert guidance system connects front-line operators with cloud knowledge bases and remote experts in real time to realize maintenance guidance. By this way, the travel cost can be reduced by 30%, the efficiency of troubleshooting increased by 25%


Sustainability

One of the purposes of ZTE to build the Binjiang Future Factory is to use its own exploration in the field of 5G+ industrial Internet to find application scenarios that can truly improve quality, reduce costs and increase efficiency, so as to promote the landing of 5G on verticals. By exploring the 5G network deployment and network construction, operation and maintenance, management and other business models within the enterprise, we can measure the matching degree of 5G and industrial needs, guide 5G protocols andequipment level optimization, enhance industrial customers’ confidence in 5G, and encourage industrial customers to migrate to the 5G environment. Operators may extend from simply providing network connections to a platforms, applications, and solutions provider, by grasping the opportunities brought by 5G to empower vertical’s digital transformation. As of Sep. 2021, a total of 500+ enterprises and institutions, and more than 10,000 offline visits and exchanges, give full play to the benchmarking role of 5G+ industrial Internet, and guide enterprises to use 5G and more use 5G to achieve huge social effects. At present, ZTE Corporation has joined hands with China Telecom to provide enterprises with a 5G virtual enterprise private network, and replicate the successful scenarios of ZTE's 5G+ industrial Internet. With the help of ZTE's own digital transformation comprehensive plan, in collaboration with industrial ecological partners, we will provide planning consultation, application verification and integration services to more enterprises that need to upgrade the digital, intelligent, and networked industrial manufacturing, and promote more enterprises accelerate the transformation and upgrading.

Due to the high energy consumption of 5G equipment, ZTE's Nanjing Binjiang 5G Smart Manufacturing Plant project is based on the principle of green and environmental protection, and adopts deep sleep and symbol shutdown technology to save energy. Deep sleep technology can make AAU enter a very low-power sleep mode by deeply shutting down AAU devices, realize a low-carbon and energy-saving production method, and promote the values ​​of the World Summit on the Information Society in many aspects.
