ICT for Comprehensive Community Development in Agriculture

The Power of Knowledge

Description

The overall goal of ICT4CCDA is to contribute to strengthen the agriculture knowledge eco-system in the MENA region by leading and moderating the generation and management of credible, integrated and specialized knowledge portals and agriculture ICT based services that increase the food production and incomes.
The project is composed of three integrated pillars as follows:
I) Aradina “Our Lands” portal, www.aradina.kenanaonline.com
Aradina is initiated based on three key concepts which are: i) the significance of knowledge for community development, ii) the value of establishing a sustainable mechanism for producing, managing and updating specialized, authenticated, efficient and professionally-presented Arabic content in the agriculture sector, and iii) the power of partnerships and networking for establishing knowledge-based organizations and building the knowledge society.

II) The Expert system, https://kenanaonline.com/expert_systems
This system investigates the most efficient agriculture knowledge management and utilization of solutions that can empower farmers with the expertise knowledge whenever needed in an easy optimized and updated way to improve their agriculture productivity; hence share in overcoming the problem of food security in Egypt.
III) The advanced Knowledge applications:
This pillar assists the agriculture institutions with advanced smart applications using the latest technologies. Examples: The Smart Water Management System to regulate, preserve, and protect the underground water resources by creating knowledge portal of water management best practices and technologies, managing and aggregating data from IoT sensors on the targeted urban areas wells to monitor and analyze water consumption patterns, and support decision makers with timely dashboard of important indicators.
Another Example: The Fish Productions and Prices Monitoring Services that includes database of all the production and fishing data across Egypt and display reports.

Replicability

ICT4CCD always adapts a novel replicable mechanism that can be replicated in its most developmental projects. The implementation mechanism here applied the following steps:
1. Identify the needs of the rural communities and the important role of local active NGOs and grassroots leaders in lives of common people synthesizing lessons and aggregating positive and negative learning
2. Establish a People Public Private Partnership and organize meetings of all partners to design solutions considering the challenges and potentials that facing tern the results into a real popular project with applicable implementation plan.
3. Develop the implementation plan
4. keep monitoring and evaluation of the progress, and documentation of the project
5. Sustaining the project by scaling it up, and at a maturing point deliver it to either the community or a specialized organization to sponsor it.

Depending on the above mentioned steps, such replication has already been done as all our portals and services are online, the dynamic digital characteristic of the project made it replicable in other locations, and other specializations. Actually, Aradina’s google analytics showed a worldwide scaling up through average annual visits of 6 Million users, 40% of them are Egyptians, 50% are from the MENA region, and 10% are distributed globally.
However, in the institutional services pillar, there is a need to localize and adapt its services. Actually, the project held a workshop in Sudan, in cooperation with the Sudanese ministry of agriculture where the team held knowledge management workshop and supported them in creating their portal and share the knowledge. The team also transformed the know-how mechanism in authenticating the shared knowledge and raising awareness of the local targeted farmers.
Moreover, ICT4CCDA is always available for any kind of support to leverage the impact of socio-economic projects in order to achieve the SDGs.

Sustainability

The program relies on a self-sustainable model that is enhanced by the contribution of our beneficiaries who are the real owners of the project. The project empowers its beneficiaries through awareness sessions, institutional development for organizations, and knowledge management trainings to take charge of sharing knowledge. In additions, Capacity building programs for partner organizations in the fields of ICT, communications, and knowledge management are applied to sustain project services. The detailed sustainability items are as follows:
• Economic sustainability; is achieved through developing the expert system that promotes for knowledgeable experts that provide sample of the crops diseases diagnosis mechanism or content on their websites then can extend their own business in consultations. This can guarantee a sustainable economic income as it helps the portal owners to fully market their knowledge and products.

• Human sustainability: The ICT4CCDA will continue its Training of Trainers (TOTs) of ICT, communications, and knowledge management courses for free. Training of the administrative and managerial staff of the partners’ organizations will ensure efficient ramification effects and could ensure the human sustainability.

• Social sustainability; The online datacenter of the ICT4CCDA project that provides free hosting to all the services and portals provides sustainable marketing and knowledge sharing opportunities to all. The online-services connect all stakeholders in one network that will gather concerned key representatives, staff, and beneficiaries together in one network around issues of interest.

• Environmental sustainability: the project type is environmental as it supports agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, in particular women, family farmers, and fishers, including through secure and equal access to knowledge, services, opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment.
