AI Repository Project

WSIS Prizes Contest 2021 Champion

Smart Assistant for Medical Professionals

The AI based system determines the 3 most likely diagnoses based on the patient's complaints and anamnesis

Description

During a patient’s visit, the clinician inputs a text description of complaints and/or anamnesis of the patient.

A Mathematical model, based on neural networks, analyses the input data and as output provides the 3 most likely diagnoses according to the ICD-10 list.

The system does not limit the doctor’s choice: the doctor can accept the recommendation of the system, or can make his judgement on the diagnosis.

SAM was tested during pilots in 4 regions of Russia with a total population of 20 million inhabitants.

Today, more than 3.5 thousand doctors from 46 polyclinics (outpatient healthcare) work with SAM every day in Moscow, and more than 2,505,344 patients were tested with SAM in October-December 2020.

The model is continuously trained on real data – as of early January 2021, more than 1.9 million visits were processed. In 70% of cases, the doctor’s choice has coincided with the model’s suggestion.

Replicability

For all countries with strong need in primary healthcare development;
CIS countries: Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova;
Reproduction of the project is possible, subject to the conclusion of an appropriate agreement with the project developer.
It is available now only in Russian, but could replicate easy in other languages.

Sustainability

There are several factors that ensure sustainability:
(1) low barrier to entry for medical organizations;
(2) easy setup - simple infrastructure requirements for connection;
(3) real positive impact for quality of diagnostics;
(4) positive experience of pilot projects ensure a constant flow of applicants to the project.

One of the key goals of the project is to assist doctors in decision making and assigning a diagnosis in primary care – the first step of every patient in the healthcare system and the most important part of the clinical process. The quality of diagnosis at the very first step determines how successful the whole treatment would be.
Multiple remote regions where medical workers do not have quick access to a second opinion greatly require such a system in the nearest future. Additionally, it is necessary for less developed countries where the level of funding for medical education is significantly lagging behind.
This is a ready-made set of innovative products created using AI technologies and designed to improve the quality of medical care.
The ecosystem designed for doctors and developers, clinics and manufacturers of medical devices.

WSIS values promotion

The sustainable development goals is a call for action for all countries. The targets are well-being, prosperity and protection of our planet and population. AI technologies can address a range of healthcare issues. The project actively promotes the values of WSIS, such as using the potential of information and communication technologies to promote the achievement of development goals, such as promoting good health and overall well-being. Prior to the pandemic, significant progress had been made in improving the health of millions of people. However, the UN has stressed the importance of using information and computer technology to prepare for health emergencies and to invest in critical national public services. Among the challenges that have become particularly pertinent are ensuring universal health coverage, including protection from financial risks and access to quality basic health services. Therefore this service enables: -an increase in quality of primary healthcare, which is the most important part of healthcare system; -a reduction of mortality rates through a timely diagnosis; -an improvement of skills of doctors all around the globe; -access to the expertise of clinicians in the most remote places on the planet. The project highlights the benefits of IT, such as AI for the sustainable development of health systems in big cities and remote regions in the most crucial part – primary healthcare. The service provides a notable example of promoting the UN goal among the healthtech community in Russia. Furthermore, it fits with the international agenda and key sustainable goals.
