IT Girls initiative, supported by the UN, UNDP, UNICEF and UN Women which aims to increase the number of girls and women in the STEM area. The most number of events were focused on children, in the form of workshops in elementary schools across Bosnia and Herzegovina and where a few of them were focused only on girls. IT Girls program impacts more than 1000 girls in the last year in Bosnia and Herzegovina as a pilot model before this program starts in the rest of the world. It is very important to underline that there is no any similar program in the local community before and the program involved a wider community under this umbrella creating different workshops.

UNDP Bosnia and Herzegovina has started a program called IT Girls. IT Girls is a pilot project of UNDP local office in Sarajevo, which is run by a group of young UN staff and volunteers trying to make a positive impact in the lives of girls and their involvement with IT. IT Girls is a project that wants to encourage girls to start thinking about education and eventually a potential career in the world of information technology, from an early age on. It started off as an initiative of young employees of United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where this idea and this topic was voted as best one in the “UNder30 Innovation Challenge”. The rationale behind the IT Girls initiative lies in the cross-cutting commitment for the participation of women and girls in the labor market and their equal involvement in all career directions outlined in frameworks for protection and promotion of women’s rights and national policies and legislation in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The IT Girls project breaks this gap by addressing the fact that women and girls remain invisible in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector. Although one of the highest paying occupation groups in BiH, with the possibility of rapid growth, the ICT sector is highly male-dominated. Therefore, IT Girls has great potential for encouraging girls to take on ICT and start developing their skills from an early age.
