Replicability

This project has accomplished fundamental theoretical analysis, customized methodology design, and key solution development for the JCSC technology, and our research achievements have received worldwide recognition. With the joint efforts from our project partners, the key JCSC technologies have been implemented and evaluated in Yangshan Port (Shanghai, China), which is the largest and fully automated container port with the No. 1 container throughput capability among all the ports in the world. Over eighty 4G and 5G base stations have been deployed within a coverage area of 25 square kilometers in Yangshan Port to support the cloud based integrated smart management of vehicles, roads and ships, including container ship berthing and unberthing, container off-loading, and container transfer via automated driving vehicles (ADVs) platooning. The cutting-edge technical equipment empowered by the JCSC technology has been developed by using the same function modules of 5G base stations to simultaneously realize the physical-world sensing and wideband communications for ADVs. Only software update is needed to glean the benefits of the JCSC technology, without incurring substantial hardware modifications. The field trial results demonstrated that both the sensing and communication performances can be guaranteed for ADVs to reach an impressive level. In addition, the methodologies adopted by JCSC technology facilitate its global standardization, which strengthens its replicability in other regions and countries. Therefore, the JCSC technology has the advantages of convenient deployment and low cost, which endows this project with high replicability. Thus, it is convenient to expand the applications of this project to support a plethora of services in different fields, including but not limited to transportation, manufacturing, healthcare, smart home, and so on, to promote the human well-being and the sustainable development of our society and economy.

Sustainability

With the development of ICT, a great many new applications are emerging rapidly. The openness and scalability of the JCSC technology can provide various services for multiple industries in the smart city scenarios, such as intelligent transportation, smart manufacturing, intelligent healthcare, smart logistics, and so on. These scenarios require high-quality communication and high-precision sensing, which urges the development and deployment of the JCSC technology. In addition, more cutting-edge technologies driven by the JCSC deployment will be further developed, such as distributed AI, cloud computing, intelligent meta-surface, and so forth. Conversely, these emerging technologies will further promote the development of the JCSC technology. The JCSC technology can help achieve the goal of high energy efficiency for the communication, sensing and computing services, while optimizing the comprehensive system performance and reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO), which promotes the sustainability of industrial production and society development.

WSIS values promotion

As one of the most innovative and transformative industries in the past decades, ICT has revolutionized all aspects of human’s daily life, economy and society. It is envisioned that this trend will continue, at least to a stage when the physical world and the digital world seamlessly converge. New ICT advances are constantly emerging to drive the development of economy, society, and people’s well-being. The JCSC technology invented in this project provides a highly innovative and valuable ICT solution that will empower the smart city services, such as intelligent transportation, smart logistics, intelligent flexible manufacturing, and intelligent healthcare, by creating a tight bond between the physical world and the digital world, hence providing various benefits of reducing resource consumption and carbon emission, promoting industrial automation and improving people’s well-being. The international collaboration in theoretical research, standard establishment and infrastructure deployment related to the JCSC technology will enable people around the world to access the affordable and ubiquitous communication, sensing and computing services. The applications of the JCSC technology in the aforementioned smart city services are feasible in practice, which fully reflects the WSIS values of leveraging ICT technologies to promote and achieve sustainable development of our economy and society.
