Weather Stations and Women's Rights


Description

The Zimbabwean chapter of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWEZI) is beginning to set up a weather station network by donating and helping schools install ATMOS 41 weather stations and putting girl students front and center in their installations. This network will provide educational opportunities for students (in engineering, meteorology, statistics, etc) and will eventually be used to help track climate and predict weather. Our aims are threefold: 1. Create the foundation for a weather station network, which will provide rural farming communities with invaluable information, thereby improving the daily life of local agriculturalists and setting the stage for more women farmers to gain the time and resources to enroll in school. 2. Put young Zimbabwean women front and center in the weather station network’s development. As the network grows, young women’s role will gain strength: those involved with implementing and maintaining the weather stations will lead their communities in owning the technological solution to a key problem. 3. Set the weather stations up in schools so not only will female students be at the reins of the growing network but the stations will simultaneously be providing educational opportunities for the young women (and men) who will be implementing and maintaining them.
