Information about the project
Biometrics Information Transfer System
BITS
"FAO Somalia has developed various biometrics-based data collection systems which improve service and product delivery for various sectors including livestock, agriculture, fisheries, and cash-based interventions. The biometrics-based databases allows FAO to register and verify beneficiaries in order for them to receive products and services in a more secure, timely, and efficient manner. For Cash-based interventions, the systems enables faster and verifiable payments via money vendors. Leveraging its experience with biometrics-based systems in Cash for Work, FAO Somalia has developed a biometrics-based fisherman’s database system for the Puntland Ministry of Fisheries. The system is used to register fishermen from different associations throughout Puntland, collect basic information about the fishermen, and print identification cards. The cards and database are used by the Ministry and stakeholders to better understand the fishing livelihood in Puntland. The database and ID card also enables the fishermen a sense of security if/when they are stopped by maritime authorities who might suspect pirate activities.
