Information about the project
West Africa Democracy Radio
West Africa Democracy Radio (WADR) Promoting Dialogue West Africa Democracy Radio is a bold attempt at making modern ICTs work for rural West Africa. It is designed as the hub of a West African network of community, commercial and public radio stations, thereby mediating dialogue between people and between communities, as well as between people and their governments. It adopts a creative approach to the use of radio to facilitate participation in various community, National and sub-regional policy processes, thereby capacitating people to become more actively involved in shaping our fast globalizing world. WADR is a trans-territorial radio station that aims (in its first phase) to facilitate the exchange of development information between the Mano River Union (MRU) countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Its objectives are to promote peace and reconciliation within a more open, tolerant and democratic society in the three MRU countries. A brainchild of the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), WADR is conceived as the hub of a West African network of public, private and community radios stations, creating an avenue for networking between these radio stations and a channel for dialogue among the people they serve. The WADR studio centre is be based in Dakar, Senegal and a WADR country office will be set up in each of the three MRU countries. The Dakar studio centre will be fed with news reports and other programme materials from the three WADR country offices. The materials sent in from the country offices will be packaged into daily radio programmes, which will be broadcast from the Dakar studio centre via shortwave to the whole of West Africa. In addition to the shortwave broadcast, the programmes will also be delivered by satellite digital radio for rebroadcast by local radio stations that are in partnership in various communities across the three countries of the MRU. In order to heighten the impact of the programmes and it The initiative serves to strengthen radio broadcasting efforts in West Africa by using complementary ICTs to facilitate a sub-regional information medium that reaches from urban through sub-urban and semi-rural, deep into rural West Africa, thereby creating channels through which information and knowledge on best practices can be exchanged throughout the sub-region. It is designed as a sustainable project that will have a long lifetime This project has been submitted to the Golden Book database.
