Description of the event
|
A common reason girls lose interest in ICT is the lack of female role models in the field, coupled with misconceptions about what the life and work of a female programmer entail. To address this issue, we visited Exlrt, a company in Novi Sad, to celebrate International Girls in ICT Day 2024. Ten girls aged 10 to 14 from Odzaci had the opportunity to meet with programmers from Exlrt. During the visit, they learned about the programmers' passion for programming, how they got started, what their workday looks like, and their favorite projects. Additionally, the girls participated in a workshop on the fundamentals of web programming. They created their online lesson plans using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript programming languages. The whole experience was particularly significant for the girls, as they come from a small town in the northwest of Serbia where such programs are not available, and they have never met female programmers nor visited an IT company before. The visit was crucial for them to see that they, too, can pursue their passion for programming, regardless of the messages they may hear from their environment that it's not a field for girls.
