Description of the event
|
SmartGirlz in ICT is an innovative program aimed at attracting/encouraging and building secondary school girls' capacities in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) through Human-Centered design (HCD). The University of Dar es Salaam College of ICT through Youth for Children (Y4C) innovation hub has successfully run the Smartgirlz in ICT program four (4) times (Currently running the 5th Cycle), with significant support from our partners like UNICEF, ICT Commission, TCRA and Tanzania Data Lab(dLab). In the four (4) Cycles, the program has reached over 17 schools in Dar es Salaam region impacting 1048 students (855 girls and 193 boys). The SmartGirlz in ICT Trainees has developed more than 660 ideas to address challenges such as low participation of girls in STEM and accessibility of digital skills to youths in Tanzania.The program runs in 3 phases each year: phase 1: training on Human-Centered Design (HCD), phase 2: business and product development training, and phase 3: training on the introduction to coding. The end of phase 1 is commemorated in the same week as the International Day of Girls in ICT and this year it will be held on 20th April 2024.
