Description of the event
The field of information and communication technologies (ICT) is constantly evolving and represents a crucial sector for the socio-economic development of each country. In Chad, despite progress in ICT adoption, women and girls remain under-represented in this area. According to the 2021 International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Gender and ICT Report, only 10% of girls worldwide choose to pursue studies in science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). In addition, women account for only 28% of the global ICT workforce, according to the same report. In Chad, there are large disparities in education, especially in STEM fields. Women's gross enrolment rates in post-secondary education, which are incredibly low, reveal a harsh and unfortunate reality. UNESCO reports only 4.5% for women, 6.2% for men. This gender disparity in ICT is reflected in the low participation rates of women and girls in ICT-related educational program and career opportunities. Despite the efforts of local and international organizations to promote women's empowerment in ICTs, much remains to be done to remove the barriers that hinder their active participation in this field.
