Women's Technology Empowerment Centre, Careers in ICT Day & Exhibition4/25/2019Africa, Nigeria, Lagos, NigeriaThe W.TEC 2019 celebration of the International Girls in ICT Day will be in partnership with the United Nations Information Center (UNIC). The event is scheduled to be a day seminar for female students between the ages of 11-17 years in Nigeria secondary schools. Some attendees of the event will be students from the W.TEC Academy schools in Lagos, alumnae of the W.TEC She create Camp, as well as girls invited from foundations and other public and private secondary schools in Nigeria.W.TEC Academy is an after-school technology training scheme for female students in secondary schools. It is an initiative that aims to inspire Nigerian girls in secondary schools to discover an early interest in technology and consider technology-related educational opportunities and careers. The She Creates Camp is aimed at helping girls develop an early interest in science, computing and other technology, as well as enabling them develop positive images of technology-related careers. The long-term goal is an increased number of women working in science, technology and engineering. International Girls in ICT Day is an initiative backed by all ITU Members which aims to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of ICTs, enabling both girls and technology companies to reap the benefits of greater female participation in the ICT sector. The W.TEC’s Girls in ICT Day event is geared towards achieving the day’s initiative to encourage more girls into the ICT field. Activities of the day is designed to feature but not limited to the following: - Keynote Address by a successful woman working in the ICT field on Gender Equality in Digital Access, Skills and Leadership - Panel Discussion: Girls in Technology: Expanding Horizons & Changing Attitudes - Exhibition Corner: Alumnae of the W.TEC She Creates Camp and W.TEC Academy will be present at the event to exhibit their past projects and share their knowledge and experiences with other girls and invited organizations present at the event. Having successful women in ICT speak with the girls and share experience with them will be one of our chances to raise awareness about the opportunities in the ICT sector and empower the girls with the knowledge that careers in ICT can be for them. Significance of the event: The event will help students have a better understanding of the opportunities in the ICT sector and give them the opportunity and channel to start think and working towards exploring career opportunities and options related to ICT as they advance in their studies.
