NFMU's Girls in ICT Mini Expo

In commemoration of International Girls in ICT day 2018, the National Frequency Management Unit in collaboration with the University of Guyana, Bygeval and North Ruimveldt Secondary and Good Hope Lusignan Community Group held an exhibition of IT projects created by women and girls of the aforementioned organizations. The exhibitions was held at the Giftland Mall from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

The exhibition featured projects created by female students at the tech camps held in April 2018 at Bygeval and North Ruimveldt Secondary School. The students from Bygeval Secondary School created models of a farm and used a soil moisture detector using Micro Bit technology to display how the technology could be used by the everyday farmer. The students from North Ruimveldt displayed two interactive games built using the Raspberry Pi and Scratch programming language.

Several projects were displayed by the team from the University of Guyana. The projects presented featured the work of both past and present students. Projects ranging from health information systems to virtual reality worlds were displayed. Additionally, presentations depicting the work of the Girls in Computing Club and Free and Open Source Software clubs from the department were displayed.

The Good Hope/ Lusignan Community Group presented a robotic snake developed by their members and the University of Guyana Robotics club.

Also on display were the BBC Micro Bit and Raspberry Pi. These devices were displayed to allow members of the public an opportunity to get a feel and develop a better understanding of the technologies.

The event gathered numerous patrons of all age groups who were interested and amazed at the works presented. The Hon. Minister of Public Telecommunications also visited the exhibitions and expressed in her remarks the need for the exhibitors to market their creations and continue on the road of invention.
