IT Girls is a pioneer initiative in BiH, focusing on gender equality in the ICT sector by targeting adolescent girls. The main aims of the initiative are to raise awareness about the professional opportunities in the ICT field, increase the confidence of girls, and provide them with practical skills. IT Girls Initiative plans to mark the International Girls in ICT Day as follows: Organize an online competition (Build mobile apps that matter!) from April 6 until Apr 20. The online competition will invite the girls ages 16 to 18 from all of Bosnia and Herzegovina to submit ideas for mobile apps in one of the eight suggested categories. International Girls in ICT Day - Apr 26. One-day event at UN House and tech co-working spaces (API Lab, HUB 387, Blum Labs, Atlant BH) in Sarajevo for 5 best teams’ ideas. Announce the training in mobile apps to be held in June. For more information on the initiative and the event please visit www.itgirls.ba or write to us at info@itgirls.ba. A total of 36 (108 girls) teams submitted their ideas for mobile apps ranging from topics related to access to quality education, environmental protection and energy efficiency, and social awareness issues (corresponding to various SDG targets). The event which took place on April 26 included 21 girls (7 winning teams) and other guests, such as 4 successful women in ICT, the Resident Coordinator of UN in BiH, Head of the Swedish Agency for Development and Cooperation and the British Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Girls had a chance to present their app ideas and then, in a form of world café, talk to successful women in ICT (IT Super Girls) featured on IT Girls website as well, and learn about their education and career paths. The winning teams are now matched with mentors and local IT companies that will support them in developing prototypes of their mobile apps for the purpose of applying with their ideas to the European Youth Awards competition. IT Girls is closely working with them to support them in this path.
