MALAWI CELEBRATES GIRLS IN ICT

The Malawi government through Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) this year celebrated ITU girls in ICT on the 27th of April at Chapananga, a remote  secondary school in the southern part of the country..

The Girls in ICT event is celebrated every year in various secondary schools across Malawi to encourage girls to take up  ICT as a career.

This year the event saw over 400 girls some of whom were drawn from surrounding secondary schools in the district of Chikwawa.

On the  day MACRA refurbished the school’s computer lab and donated 10 computers and provided intranet connectivity.

MACRA also produced a brochure on available prospects  for girls in ICT. This is something that girls will reflect on and cherish for some time. T-shirts were also distributed to girls.

A career talk was carried out by both MACRA personnel and various prominent women who have taken up professional careers in the ICT industry.

MACRA will also facilitate an ICT workshop aimed at training over the 400 girls and equip them with ICT skills.

Speaking at the event Director of information in the ministry of  ICT Mr. Gideon Munthali who was the guest of honour emphasized government’s  dedication towards promotion of ICT especially in rural areas where people do not have access to such services.

In his remarks MACRA’s Technical Adviser on Broadcasting  Content Mr. Bright Malopa encouraged girls to take up careers in ICT adding that to educate a girl means to educate a nation.
