EVENT VIDEO LINKS GENERAL INTRODUCTION The wide spread reliance on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and the meteoric growth of the Internet and online services are Strong testimonies of the benefit of shared data and shared resources. Hence the need for a reliable ICT training, deployment and Management in Uganda has been a long-standing wish of many corporate, industrial, banking and the private sector. In the rural village of Kasese, it is observed that many families are poor, many youths are illiterate, half-literate. They have no work to do to support their families, even they have no idea to start some business and have no money too. After observing this panic situation of the rural poor youths we could understand that there is a need of training on Information Communications Technology. Event objectives To develop ICT knowledge among young people in Kasese. Being exposed to the centres shallbenefit the youth in gaining knowledge on ICT. To provide hands-on education and training on ICT for the users: There shall be computerclasses for the users of the centres. In these they will learn the basics of computers with courses that reflect acceptable standards. To exploit opportunities available in the ICT industry to better meet youth employment: TheICT industry is by far the rapidly growing industry, it has vast opportunities of employment, ranging from typing to programming. Some of the computer courses are provided free online. This project shall seize those opportunities to help the youth with them. To train young people of Kyanya Kasese in ICT systems development and support: As part ofthe classes to be provided, the youth shall be trained to know how to upgrade systems and how to maintain programmes.
NATURE OF COMMUNITY SERVED Young people aged 17-30 who do not have access to ICT were given first priority. These are people who cannot afford exposing themselves to ICT but are willing to learn and develop their knowledge on ICT and computer maintenance. EVENT IMPLEMENTATION BENEFITS The youth were: Have access to ICT. be trained on ICT use and basic html programming be trained on websites and systems development and support Gain knowledge on ICT for the work area. Have more opportunities for employment. NUMBER OF PEOPLE TO BENEFIT An estimated 100 young people in Kasese district benefited from the event. This number increased due to high demands for the skills in ICT. These should be trained to use ICT and develop a simple website as their skills on ICT. They can exploit opportunities of self-employment in the industry of ICT. EVENT’S IMPACT ON DEVELOPMENT Through this event young people will be employable. They shall learn to use ICT programs for office functions. They have gained training on ICT. Also young people discover opportunities of self-employment and entrepreneurship in the ICT industry. The event have a positive impact in the economy of the country as young people develop their knowledge and use of ICT and be in line with the world on ICT lowering the unemployment and illiteracy of youth in Kasese. DURING EVENT DAY The event was be held at Kyanya Primary School. The event started off by giving a brief overview about the Girls in computer programming event and why it is conducted by the Trust and international telecommunication union. There was also video session in relation to inspirations. The event videos were taken to show each of them explaining about a specific career in ICT today to expose them to various job options in ICT in order to transform Kasese Uganda. After lunch time, website management session begun with creating Facebook pages and free blogs. Questions and answers commenced at 3pm and event football match also commence at 5pm and the trust worn the trophy. The event closed at 6:42pm
RISKS/CHALLENGES No established computer centre for instant practical’s. This would sustain the event and skills gained from the event. Exchange rate was not friendly as this even affected our purchases. Illiteracy rate is so high within Girls/women Kasese Uganda Poor cultures on Girls Education needs. Lack of enough training facilities more especially computers.
EVALUATION
We now have skills in ICT, Internet use, online employment search and basics of computer programming
Improved local technological innovations in ICT.
Now 100 girls can now use internet, search engines, social media like Facebook and blogs.
Mobilisation and radio talk shows have provided awareness to girls and policy makers for updates information on women rights issues and over 3000 people responded to our call.
Partnership with international telecommunication union has created bond between with communities by bring together girls in Kasese Uganda.
The event has help girls in reduction of stress and shall contribute to reduction of HIV/AIDS due to concentration on internet for tips. The obstacles; No established computer centre for instant practical’s. Limited funds to facilitate instant training materials. Increased number of participants where we planned only 50 but we ended up training with 110. We had small budget deficit of $198 due to increased demand for skills and inflation. Solution We followed our budget line We discussed well with suppliers We used local human and non human resources Used local and English languages in training girls Participant’s recommendations during evaluation and Discussion There were the following needs Girls recommended that we sustain the event by providing Girls computer space and training centre to boost Girls education in ICT. To procure computers, hardware’s to ensure that ICT is availed to girls fully. There was need to training girls in credit and savings to improve on girl’s education in order to tape higher education, incomes and for women to save to become rich as well as micro finance funds. IV. Girls need ICT project or one ICT centre that will sustain the skills gain. OVERALL PARTICIPANTS REQUEST Girls and women request International Telecommunication Union for event expansion into an ICT Centre project which will have more computers and more hardware for ICT skills sustainability.
