BBC celebrates International Girls in ICT Day

4/26/2018

Europe, United kingdom, BBC Birmingham, Wharfside Street, Birmingham, UK

The BBC is celebrating International Girls in ICT Day by inviting local school girls and teachers into BBC Birmingham for a day of hands-on workshops and activities. We will show how ICT underpins so much of what we do as broadcasters and give the girls the opportunity to meet and talk to women who work in STEM roles at the BBC. Activities include micro:bit and satellite workshops, BBC iPlayer and software accessibility and information and security challenges. Girls can explore technology to consume, create and interact with content in the BBC Blue Room and learn how to present the weather in a broadcasting studio with a local weather presenter.

To give a window onto the world from the UK, we will also have a live link into our BBC office at the UN in Geneva, anchored at both ends by BBC presenters, and with a special guest appearance from the UK Ambassador Julian Braithwaite. The girls will be able to ask questions to our BBC News correspondent in Geneva and to our other guests: women working in STEM roles at international organisations in Geneva (European Broadcasting Union and ITU).
