Girls as Creators of Tech, Plan International Finland and Accenture

To celebrate the International Girls in ICT Day on April 26th Plan International Finland and Accenture is organize a workshop for 16-20 year old girls and young women. Plan will invite girls from various backgrounds to come together and have an experience of becoming active creators of technology. The workshop will also introduce inspiring examples of girls and women creating new technical solutions around the world.

With the support of experts from Accenture the girls will learn about their opportunities in the field of technology and have an empowering experience of succeeding in building their own robot. The staff from Accenture will share their expertise and information as well as provide the materials for the workshop. The workshop will include a challenge of building a Lego robot and an opportunity to try out technological innovations and their applications such as virtual reality glasses.

The participants come from various backgrounds. Most of the girls have a migrant background and their Finnish skills are not yet fluent. There will also be girls from Finnish background participating in the workshop. The workshop will provide a chance for girls to meet their peers. By doing the participatory activities the girls will also share a common language in the field of tech. The main aim of the workshop is to encourage girls to consider studies and careers in information and communication technologies. Plan will provide information about future paths to girls who are interested in this opportunity.

In Finland Plan, encourages young people through campaigns and trainings to become active citizens. Plan International Finland also works with the most vulnerable groups and especially with immigrant youth who have moved to Finland at the end of compulsory education age and thus face a higher risk of marginalization. In the Girls in ICT Day workshop the different youth groups will come together to become active creators of technology and have an opportunity to learn from the experts and form each other.
