REPORT ON THE EVENT

The Two-days International workshop on “Girls in ICT” was conducted on 25th and 26th April 2019 for 30 9th Graders of Government School, Rathinamangalam at Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai, TamilNadu, India. This event aimed to highlight the relevance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for the betterment of girl children from their school days.

Girls in ICT Day, an initiative backed by  ITU aims to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider career in the growing field of ICTs, enabling both girls and technology companies to reap the benefits of greater female participation in the ICT sector.

Day1: Spearheaded with a formal Inaugural session at 09.30 am. Dr. N.Sambandan, Pro-vice Chancellor, VIT University, Chennai delivered the special address, and encouraged the workshop participants to pursue career in digital and information technology.

Captain. Sumathy, Administrative Officer, VIT University, Chennai felicitated the gathering and said that there is an urgent need to enable girl children to use Information and communication technology, so that their overall progress is assured. She further set example of her own life where she as a woman pursues an unsual career amidst all challenges posed on her. Dr. Kalyani Desikan further inspired the students to be confident about themselves and what they want to do. She in fact added that girls are extremely good at multi-tasking. Dr. D. Rekha proposed the vote of thanks.

The Chief Guest of the inaugural event Mrs.Jamuna Swamy delivered a motivational talk to the young minds. The session threw light on three keys factors: acquiring knowledge, Self Confidence, no self pity.

 The second session of Day-1 threw light on “Awareness on Green computing” by Prof.Anusooya.G. The importance of  Digital world was highlighted during the session of  Dr.Asnath Phamila. Introduction to MS office followed by importance of  personality development was showcased by Prof.K .Punitha.

Day-2: Commenced with a session by Dr. Vydeki that indicated the reasons why it is necessary to prepare girls for a smart world. The second event of  Day-2 was a technical event ‘Robotics for kids’ by Dr. Rekha.

This event was followed by an introduction given on Entrepreneurship by Dr.O.V.Gnana Swathika. She gave the students the idea of how the students can run their own business and become employers. To add reality to this dream, an inspiring entrepreneur Mrs.Vidhya Raju, Comfort Design delievered a motivating talk. An electrifying session on Energy conservation was further presented by Dr.G. Kanimozhi and Dr.O.V.Gnana Swathika. The next session talked in detail about broad career opportunities which was portrayed by Dr. E.Umamaheswari. The two days workshop winded up with fun filled activities organized by Prof.Priyadharshini. The students of the Government school extended their heartfelt thanks to VIT Management and the organizers for allowing them to be a part of this Outreach Program.
