University of Lodz successfully welcomed Girls in ICT Day to Poland

On April 25, for the first time in the program’s history, Girls in ICT Day was held in Poland. University of Lodz, one of country’s biggest and most renowned universities, hosted a workshop as a part of this groundbreaking ITU program. We encouraged girls and young women to consider launching their professional careers in the ICT blooming local industry. We’ll did it by… programing fruit.

The main event included an IT workshop for 30 girls aged 13-15 from Lodz high schools which cooperate with UoL as part of its "open door" program. Girls were invited to the Faculty of Physics and Applied Informatics, where they learned the basics of programming and robotics. After a brief theoretical introduction into the world of programming, participants were encouraged to write a simple piece of code that "programmed" fruit connected to a microelectronic systems so that they served as a piano keyboard (please see photos below, © Tobiasz Waclawiak, who also organized and conducted the training).

This practical training was preceded by a meeting at the Faculty of Law and Administration on online threats and cybersecurity. We welcomed speakers from NASK (Ms Anna Borkowska, heading the training and education section within NASK), Marshal Office of Lodz Region (Ms Sylwia Karolak Marcinkowska) and Voivodeship Police Office (Mr Michal Brykowski), who on daily bases deal with the education of children and youth in recognizing and mitigating online threats. This part of the event was open to both: girls and boys from invited high schools, with over 90 kids listening to the presentations, who were not shy to share their comments and ask questions on online trends and ways of effectively protecting yourself against threats lurking in cyberspace (please see photos below, © Promocja UŁ).

The first edition of the workshop was met with great interested and UoL is already planning for a second edition. Please feel free to reach out to us if you’re interested in joining us for GirlsInICT Day 2020 in Lodz.
