Description of the event
Girls‘ Day was held on 23.04. The Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMIMI) invited 70 girls’ aged 12-14 from a secondary school into the ministry. First they participated in a workshop about traditional gender roles and how to combat them. Afterwards they were divided into 4 groups. Each group saw a different aspect of work in the field of STEM and took part in corresponding activities. The first group learnt about electromobility by building their own Lego cars with attached solar panels with a race afterwards. The second group used building blocks and wooden vehicles to build intermodal transportation ways. Group number 3 held a press conference with one of the ministry’s DGs about railway services, their maintenance and how to build the best possible system. The girls asked questions and answered some of them. They also learned how to use the technical equipment necessary for such an event. The last group gained insights on AI, by exploring the unconscious biases most AI models have, but also by experiencing first hand that AI can be helpful – half the group had to build Lego models blindfolded with the help of an AI program reading the instructions.
