Description of the event

The Ethiopia 2026 Girls in ICT Day celebrations were held on 22–23 April 2026 at the African Union Commission Headquarters in Addis Ababa under the theme **“AI for Development: Girls shaping the digital future.”** Convened by ITU in partnership with the African Union Commission and UN Women, the event brought together girls and young women, policymakers, development partners, the private sector and civil society to promote girls’ participation in ICTs and emerging technologies. Around **200 girls and young women** were engaged, with a preparatory day focused on mentorship, digital safety, and practical group work on AI solutions to community challenges. The official celebration featured high-level remarks, a keynote on inclusive AI, and an intergenerational dialogue on digital gender equality. The event highlighted the importance of mentorship, digital skills pathways, connectivity, device access, and gender-responsive AI policies to support girls’ leadership in Africa’s digital future.
