Overview

USMin collaboration with Telebort has launched the Girls in ICT (GICT) Campaign in2019. The community engagement program aims to encourage and empower girls andyoung women to consider studies and careers in ICT from a younger age, thusenabling both girls and technology companies to reap the benefits of greaterfemale participation and readiness in the ICT sector in Malaysia.

In2021, the GICT Girls2Code program will focus on the following objectives:

1)To cultivate interest in programming and becoming technology creators amongyoung girls

2)To create greater exposure to programming among girls and their parents throughgame creation 

3)To make female ICT role models more visible to girls

 

Target Participants

Targetparticipants are lower primary (7 – 9 years old) and upper primary(10 – 12 years old) schoolgirls. As our theme this year is to encouragegirls to code with a parent or guardian, each registration includes agirl-parent team.

Numberof participants: 100 - 300

 

Theme

CodeMaven 1.0 will focus on the theme of game creation using Scratch. Theworkshops are designed to encourage students to learn the programmingconstructs required to put together a simple but fun game. 


Tentative Program: CodeMaven1.0

GICT2021 will go completely virtual. The campaign consists of 1 virtual launchsession + 4 live short coding workshops + 1 game coding challenge. Allactivities will be conducted using the Zoom online meeting platform. 

CodeMaven1.0 Launch Day: 22 April 2021 (Thursday) – ITU’s GICT Day 2021

  • Time:8.00 – 8.20 p.m.
  • GameOnmoment: Let the participants to first play a Scratch game and then prompt themto “see inside” to take a look at how the game is created from Scratch blocks.
  • Programintroduction: Create a fun game using Scratch.
  • Settingthe stage and expectations especially for the parents (do it together with thechild).
  • Introducethe coding challenge and the live workshops.

CodeMaven1.0 Coding Camps (Live Workshops): 26 April – 29 April 2021 (Monday – Thursday)

  • Eachlive workshop will run for 20 minutes (8.00 – 8.20 p.m.) on Zoom.
  • Thegame in the coding challenge will be divided into four components. Each liveworkshop (i.e., camp) will cover a programming construct required to create agame.
  • Day1: CodeMaven Camp 1.1
  • Day2: CodeMaven Camp 1.2
  • Day3: CodeMaven Camp 1.3
  • Day4: CodeMaven Camp 1.4

CodeMaven1.0 Game Jam (Game Coding Challenge): 30 April -  2 May 2021 (Friday – Sunday)

  • Day5: Reveal the codingchallenge and the judging criteria (8.00 – 8.20 p.m.).
  • Day6 – Day 7: CodeMaven 1.0 Game Jam.
  • Participantswill team up with a parent to work on creating a game for the coding challengethroughout Saturday and Sunday.
  • Tobe considered for rewards and prizes, the game must be submitted between 8.00p.m. – 10.00 p.m. to a Scratch classroom.
  • SixScratch classrooms will be created for the coding challenge submission, one foreach age group.
  • Games submittedwill be evaluated and scored by our university student mentors/volunteers (CodeSysters)and the task force, and the top three winners from each age group will be awardedwith prizes.
