Mr. Darmen Ellayah has served in the Mauritius Police Force in various capacities since the past 30 years. He joined the Helicopter Squadron in 1990 and studied Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering at the Communication Training Institute in the Indian Air Force. Darmen Ellayah completed a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Technology, Mauritius in 2017 and his final thesis was based on “Economic Resilience to Disasters” which was published in the Journal of Indian Ocean Rim Studies, 2017 Vol. 1. Besides, he is also a social worker working voluntarily in the field of addiction treatment and co-authored a publication for research work at University of Western Australia which was published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology in May 2014. Mr Ellayah was posted at the Police Information Operations Room before he joined the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre as a pioneer staff in 2013 where he applied his skills and experience in the Telecommunication Sector in managing disasters. He believes innovation and technology should be extensively used within Disaster Management processes to save lives and livelihood and thus build resilience. Mr. Ellayah has participated in many local and international workshops in disaster management and has been involved in several disaster related ICT projects. He values the support of his wife and 2 children and proud to be able to serve his country as a Disaster Management Official to save lives and reduce suffering.
