Examples of Successful ICT Public Private Partnerships
Examples from Bangladesh

This session will be moderated by Michael Riggs, Knowledge and Information Management Officer, FAO and the focal point for e-agriculture forum.

This session on “Examples of Successful ICT Public Private Partnerships, global experiences of Swisscontact” will demonstrate how ICT can generate positive wider changes in the lives of rural masses. This session will be comprised of two presentations from Katalyst, a Swisscontact project in Bangladesh and Swisscontact head quarters.

Md. Arafat Hossain from Katalyst will present a case, “Making ICT work for the poor in Rural Bangladesh through Public-Private Partnership” Katalyst presentation will focus on the following:

  1. How ICT facilitates easier access to information and ITES through commercial Community Information Centers (CICs).  The Grameen Telephone—largest  mobile telephone service provider in the country—telecenters  are catering to the needs of rural farmers, entrepreneurs and general populace.  

  2. How mobile based information and advisory services through a call center of Banglalink—the second largest mobile telephone service provider—is generating wider benefits for the rural farmers and entrepreneurs.

  3. How need-based public services can be offered through private channels. Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD) is developing an e-governance model in collaboration with Katalyst, where private sector channels would be used for service delivery.

The second presentation will be made by Markus Kupper, Head of Knowledge and Content Management, Swisscontact. This presentation will highlight diverse global ICT4D experience of Swisscontact and replication plan of successful initiatives. The presentation will also focus on plans for launching mobile-based remittance to fight poverty.
