THE TELECOM 95 PROGRAMME FOR DEVELOPMENT For the first time in the history of TELECOM exhibitions, TELECOM will offer a comprehensive and ambitious Programme for Development at the forthcoming exhibition, to be held in Geneva from 3 to 11 October 1995. The Programme, sponsored by 13 of the major TELECOM exhibitors (Alcatel, Cable and Wireless College, Ericsson, IBM, MCI, Motorola, NEC, Northern Telecom, Nynex, Philips, Siemens, Telebras and TIA), is intended for least developed countries (LDC), low income countries (LIC) and newly industrializing countries (NIC). The Telecom 95 Programme for Development will be twofold: on the one hand, a two and a half day seminar (12-14 October) will focus on technology and human resources management; on the other hand, a number of NICs will be given an opportunity to exhibit at Telecom - the “NIC Pilot Project”. It is altogether in keeping with the spirit of the World Telecommunication Development Conference, held in Buenos Aires in March 1994, which advocated the creation of special programmes for the least developed countries The seminar will take place immediately after Telecom and will aim at showing how the combined use of technology and human resources can serve to advance telecommunications development in LDCs and LICs. Fellowships will enable about 200 individuals - senior telecommunication engineers and personnel managers - not only to take part in the seminar, but also, from the 8 to the 11 October, to visit Telecom and attend Forum sessions, in particular that of the Technology Summit on Telecommunications in developing countries. Under the NIC Pilot Project, research and development institutions and/or manufacturing companies from a number of selected NICs will be provided, free of charge, with exhibition space and booths, so as to enable them to promote their products and services as well as to meet and exchange ideas with telecommunication organizations. The main selection criteria will be technical excellence combined with sound market orientation and an inability to participate in TELECOM 95 on account of inadequate financial means and the absence of national sponsorship.
